Guardia Civil catches a couple riding motorised scooters on the motorway in Mazarrón (Murcia).

The Guardia Civil of the Region of Murcia has surprised two young people while driving on the RM-3 Totana-Mazarrón motorway, as it passes through the municipality of Mazarrón, on board two motorbikes without helmets, lighting, compulsory insurance and registration plates, according to sources from the Benemérita in a statement.

They are a man and a woman, aged 23, residents of Ramonete-Lorca and Cuevas de Reyllo-Fuente Álamo who, in addition, lacked a driving licence, having never obtained it, so they have been investigated as alleged perpetrators of a crime against road safety.

The action was initiated when Civil Security prevention officers observed the presence of two motorised scooters circulating on the RM-3 Totana-Mazarrón motorway, as it passes through the municipality of Mazarrón.

The civil guards identified the young drivers who were riding at night, without lights and without helmets, with the consequent danger to their safety and that of other road users.

The officers also found that the vehicles, popularly known as motor scooters, lacked registration plates and the documentation required for the type of vehicle, such as the compulsory insurance and the certificate of technical characteristics. In addition, the drivers did not have a driving licence, as they had never obtained one.

Specialists from the Cartagena Attestation Team were sent to the scene, and the corresponding proceedings were instituted for the alleged offences against road safety.

The intercepted vehicles belong to category L1e-B, of the EU Regulation 168/2013, receiving a treatment similar to the conditions of circulation of a moped.

The Guardia Civil recalled that the requirements for the circulation of these vehicles are, among others, to be homologated and registered, to have a certificate of characteristics, circulation licence and compulsory insurance for vehicles; and, for the drivers, to use a helmet and to possess, at least, a valid driving licence for mopeds.

The persons under investigation – a man and a woman, aged 23, of Spanish nationality – and the proceedings have been handed over to the Court of Instruction in Totana (Murcia).
