DGT (Directorate General of Traffic) warns against carrying loose objects in the car

Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) warns of the danger that passengers can run due to loose objects in the vehicle. At the wheel, every precaution is too little, and if you can avoid a risk while driving, any action is worthwhile. DGT reminds us that due to the effect of inertia, any object travelling loose in a car continues to move forward and multiplies, due to the effect of speed, the force with which it would hit any occupant by up to forty times its weight at only 50 km/h.

Often when you are behind the wheel you don’t realise how dangerous it is to leave anything loose, no matter how small, can cause an accident. Leaving your mobile phone, sunglasses or a bottle of water on the seat can become a very dangerous projectile in the event of a crash or sudden braking. In addition, having objects lying around on the seats can be a distraction and lead to an accident.

The elephant effect is the situation in which the occupants of a vehicle are involved when they are hit by people in the rear seats who are not wearing seat belts or are hit by objects that are loose in the vehicle. In this way, as they are not properly restrained, these people or the objects continue their trajectory through the interior of the vehicle by inertia, multiplying their weight. As explained in the DGT magazine, the force of the blows can be so great that the victims can sometimes suffer serious injuries.
