The spokesperson for Ecological Transition of Cs, María Carmen Martínez and the Liberal deputy Juan Ignacio López-Bas have presented in the Congress of Deputies a question in the Congress of Deputies to find out what measures the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS) is going to take in relation to the Camposol Urbanization in Mazarrón (Murcia), consisting of some 4. The urbanisation suffered extensive damage when the Los Aznares Wadi overflowed its banks in September 2014 due to poor channelling.
Ciudadanos’ national deputy Juan Ignacio López-Bas Valero has denounced that “in the Camposol Urbanisation, alternatives and solutions should already be being studied by the town hall, the Community and the central government, through the CHS. These 4,000 homes are at serious risk of flooding because they are located in a wadi. This issue cannot be delayed any longer and the three administrations have to get involved”.
For her part, María José Ros Olivo, regional coordinator of Ciudadanos, pointed out that “three and a half years have passed and we have had no news about it and no solution has been proposed. The residents of this area deserve to have their rights defended and to be able to live in peace”.
In March 2018, the plenary of the Murcia Regional Assembly unanimously approved an opinion declaring that the current state of the Los Aznares wadi posed a risk to the homes and people who live there, the majority of whom are British.
It also noted that the usual diligence of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura in its fluvial police interventions in this case did not exist and that “it was incomprehensible that a wadi, Los Aznares, had been channelled over a 1,500 metre stretch, crossing the aforementioned urbanisation, between 2000 and 2003, and that the CHS had not prevented it”.
The opinion contains a proposal recommending the creation of a committee representing the Mazarrón Town Council, the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura to plan, coordinate and implement the necessary measures for the prompt reversion of the current situation to legality.
