Mojácar, national venue for the pétanque championships for people with disabilities

Last weekend, the municipality of Levante Almeriense welcomed a hundred athletes from different parts of Spain.

The Provincial Council and Mojácar Town Council, together with companies and associations, have joined forces to place the province of Almería on the national sporting scene. This weekend, the Spanish Petanque Championship for people with intellectual disabilities was held in Mojácar at the Mojácar Petanque Club.

The FEDDI Spanish Petanque Championship for clubs, included in the official FEDDI calendar, aims to bring together the largest number of clubs and athletes practising this sport for people with intellectual disabilities in Spain.

Throughout the championship, several institutional representatives were present. These included the Provincial Councillor for Sports, José Antonio García; the President of the Spanish Sports Federation for People with Intellectual Disabilities, Javier Guitierrez Hernández; José Antonio Antolín, Manager of the Los Carriles Foundation and Francisco García Cerdá, Mojácar Town Councillor for Sports, accompanied by Ana García, who is also a member of the Council.

The Councillor for Sports, José Antonio García, highlighted the Institution’s commitment to all people regardless of their abilities: “We equalise opportunities so that anyone can do what they like to do. Sport teaches and transmits values that are fundamental for the development of our lives and the Diputación will always be at the side of the town councils to promote sport and coexistence”.

Francisco García Cerdá, Mojácar Councillor for Sports, highlighted the importance of sport and physical activity at all ages and for everyone, as well as the Council’s support for its promotion and implementation as a healthy habit. Francisco García thanked the players and the organisers for their presence, placing special emphasis on the Los Carriles Foundation and the great effort made over the years, without whose support this competition would not have been possible.

Fourteen pétanque clubs from 8 Autonomous Communities took part in this event, with 126 athletes, 48 coaches, 45 volunteers and other staff, and more than 200 spectators and accompanying persons. The events were held at three levels of participation in accordance with the federation’s regulations for the sport: competition (triples), adapted (doubles) and sports skills (individuals).

The first places went to Javier Casanova of CD Primi Sport in the individual category; in the duplets category Primi Sport also won first place and in the triples category to Atlético Fortius. The winners received a beautiful trophy made in Macael marble by the members of the Los Carriles Foundation.

The organisational structure of the championship was made up of Mojácar Town Council, Macael Town Council, the Almeria Provincial Council, FEDDI, the Andalusian Petanque Federation, the Almeria Petanque Delegation, the Mojácar Petanque Club, the Regional Association “Mundo de Todos”, the Los Carriles Sports Club and the San Marcos Sports Club.
