The XXXV edition of ‘La Clásica Ciclista de Almería’ (The Clásica Ciclista of Almería) will once again show the whole world the excellence of the ‘Costa de Almería’ destination for the practice of this sport and as the perfect setting to enjoy active tourism in the open air at any time of the year. The Provincial Palace hosted the presentation of one of the most prestigious international one-day cycling events.
The journalist Juan Antonio Manzano was the master of ceremonies at the launch of one of the main sporting events held in the province and which this year will feature 20 teams, 8 of them from the top category World Tour, 140 riders, one of them the ejidense Cristian Rodríguez, and a caravan of more than 500 professionals who will enjoy and promote Almería as a paradise for cycling.
The president of Almeria Provincial Council, Javier A. García, has highlighted the consolidation of this race as one of the most important cycling competitions in the world. “It puts our land on the international sporting front page as one of the best destinations in which to enjoy outdoor sport at any time of the year. The Clásica maintains intact its pioneering character as the first great competition that has extolled the benefits of our land by linking sport to one of our treasures: agriculture. It was born almost 40 years ago as ‘La ruta de las hortalizas'”.
He also recalled that thanks to the drive of José Manuel Muñoz and his team, the “combative and genuine” spirit is still fully alive and helps us to export our province to the whole world through the Eurosport broadcast, which reaches 52 countries with a potential audience of more than 280 million households.
Javier A. García recalled that “if we are a reference point for La Vuelta and international cycling it is thanks to the enormous experience that La Clásica has given us for 40 years. A race that awakens institutional collaboration, teamwork and that, as in cycling, highlights the importance of effort to overcome each challenge”.
The delegate of the Government of the Junta de Andalucía highlighted the importance of this race: “The repercussion for our province of Almería once again shows its potential as a venue for major sporting events thanks to the celebration of the XXXV edition of the Clásica Ciclista. Sporting events like this contribute, in addition to promoting the practice of sport and the sporting spectacle for fans, to generate income and other types of benefits for our province”.
In the same way, he explained that “over the course of its various editions, the Clásica de Almería has gone from being an important cycling event for professionals and amateurs, to being a high-level sporting competition, with the media and economic plus that it represents for Almería”.
For his part, the mayor of El Ejido, Francisco Góngora, has assured that the municipality is ready to receive and be the starting point for one of the great cycling events and that the citizens can enjoy the great technical, human, sporting and media display that this spectacular event entails. “Here the word ‘spectacle’ takes on its full meaning and, without a doubt, it will once again be enjoyed by all those who attend it, especially by cycling enthusiasts, who are becoming more and more numerous in the province and in El Ejido, where we have two great clubs, BiciClub Ejido and the Club Ciclista Ciudad de El Ejido, which bring together hundreds of enthusiasts who get out to cycle every week”.
He also highlighted the great athletes and cyclists who carry the name of El Ejido and our province, such as Cristian Rodríguez, who participates in La Clásica, and who is already a regular in major events such as the Tour de France, the Vuelta a España and the Giro. “Sport is not only important to lead a healthier life physically and mentally, but it also helps us to structure our lives in a certain way and, therefore, a society that practises any sport is a more structured society. This event is also a magnificent promotion of the many attractions of our province and will help a sector strongly affected by the pandemic, such as tourism”.
For his part, the mayor of Roquetas de Mar, Gabriel Amat, has highlighted the satisfaction of this municipality becoming one more year the finish line of a race that is already a reference in the UCI calendar because with it the campaign of the great classics in the European territory begins. “In addition, the arrival of the multicoloured peloton in Roquetas de Mar is a unique opportunity to promote our municipality, which contributes to the consolidation of Roquetas de Mar as an ideal tourist destination for sport,” he explained.
He also congratulated “the professionals who, thanks to their work, ensure that the organisation of this event places Almeria as a province with a great capacity to host events and sporting events of this nature, as well as the Almeria Provincial Council for the backing and support it shows to consolidate this type of sporting event”.
Finally, José Manuel Muñoz, organiser and alma mater of the cycling race, thanked the support of the institutions for making the 35th edition of the Clásica a reality, which “remains true to its origins, travelling throughout the Poniente and is open to continue representing the whole province in future editions”.
On the other hand, he highlighted the high quality of the teams, including Gora, Movistar, Astana and the most powerful team in the world from the Arab Emirates.
