The Almeria Provincial Council, through the Youth Area, has made available to Almeria residents in municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants a distance learning programme called ‘Aula Mentor’. Through this initiative, anyone, from their home, can access more than 200 online courses in a wide range of different modalities: computer science, big data, languages, tourism, web design, etc.
The ‘Aula Mentor’ project has designed a flexible working method in terms of study time, in which students can set their own learning pace, as there are no pre-established timetables. In addition, the Provincial Institution has established collaboration mechanisms with the coordinators and technicians of the Guadalinfo Centres, as a gateway to the digital world, especially in the smaller municipalities. In this way, the programme is a real mechanism in the fight against depopulation.
The Almeria Provincial Council for Youth, José Antonio García, has highlighted that this programme is another tool that contributes to the training of hundreds of people from Almeria: “all students from any town in the province can improve and professionalise their curriculum with just a computer and internet connection. Online training without timetables allows students to use their free time to take these courses”.
In addition, the Almeria Provincial Council has pointed out that the ‘Aula Mentor’ programme contributes to “reducing the salary gap and promotes equal opportunities among Almeria residents with regard to virtual training. We take advantage of the potential of information technologies and local resources such as the Guadalinfo Centres to offer courses that are adapted to the needs of each student”.
The objectives of the ‘Aula Mentor’ programme are focused on providing an alternative in terms of training to the population who do not have the opportunity to attend face-to-face courses and whose learning pace and/or dedication requires a totally flexible system.
The target population is made up of young people and adults who wish to acquire, update, complete or broaden their knowledge and skills for their personal or professional development. Two objectives are pursued: on the one hand, to improve knowledge and, on the other hand, to improve training and job qualifications.
The advantages that the student finds in this training modality are the following:
Selection of a training subject from a wide range of training offers.
Enrolment in one of the Mentor classrooms closest to your home at the time you need it. There are no start or end dates for studies.
Monitoring of a pace of work appropriate to your ability, academic level and time commitment.
Adaptation to your training needs through the development of extension and reinforcement activities.
