Driver who fatally hit cyclist in Mazarrón arrested
The accident occurred on 15 March and the perpetrator allegedly left the scene after hitting the cyclist, without rendering or requesting assistance.

A 58 year old resident of Mazarrón has been arrested and placed at the disposal of the Court of Instruction number 3 of Totana as the alleged perpetrator of the fatal hit-and-run of a 57 year old cyclist which occurred at 6:41 a.m. on 15 March in Cañada de Gallego (Mazarrón).

The detainee had fled at the time of the fatal hit-and-run on the RM-D21 road (N-332-Puntas de Calnegre), so the Attestations Team of the Lorca Traffic Detachment and the Traffic Investigation and Analysis Group (G.I.A.T.) carried out the technical-ocular inspection and collected evidence, testimonies, proof and vestiges from the scene of the accident in order to clarify the facts.

It was found that the accident was caused by a Ford Focus but the number plate was unknown in this crime of gross negligence manslaughter and abandonment of the scene of the accident which was the responsibility of the driver who was being sought by the Benemérita.

Neighbours and fruit and vegetable companies in Cañada Gallego and in particular the staff of the Technical Vehicle Inspection Stations in the Region of Murcia (ITVs in Águilas, Mazarrón, Totana and Alhama de Murcia) collaborated with the Guardia Civil in this case and as a result of the information gathered, The agents located the suspect vehicle in the courtyard of a house located in the urbanization Los Conejos, in the municipality of Molina de Segura, which had some damage that responded to the pattern of the investigated event and whose owner argued that he had bought it from a resident of Mazarrón two days after the accident occurred.

A detailed analysis carried out by civil guards from the Judicial Police Unit of the Guardia Civil and the GIAT of the Traffic Sector of the Guardia Civil, provided sufficient evidence of the alleged link between the vehicle inspected and the deceased.

The investigation has culminated with the location of the driver allegedly involved in the events, a 58-year-old Spanish male from Mazarrón, who has been arrested as the alleged perpetrator of the crimes of reckless homicide and leaving the scene of the accident.

According to the investigation, after causing the accident, he left the scene, abandoning the injured cyclist without personally helping him or requesting the necessary assistance to avoid the fatal outcome. The detainee, the vehicle and the investigative measures have been handed over to the court.
