The Local Police of Huércal-Overa is intensifying the surveillance and control of waste in the municipality with a special campaign to prevent it being deposited in unauthorised places, an action which causes both health problems and a bad image of the municipality.
Local Police officers have already imposed fines on some residents for dumping waste in unauthorised places, a practice which the Town Hall regrets is more common than it seems, with waste and even rubble from private individuals being found in numerous streams in the municipality. In view of this regrettable situation, economic sanctions are included in the municipal ordinance of Police, Good Governance and Citizen Coexistence in Huércal-Overa, which includes the prohibition of “throwing, pouring or depositing rubbish, water, liquids, earth, debris, detritus, bottles or other types of containers, as well as paper or waste of any kind, both in public or community spaces and in private spaces”. These actions carry financial penalties ranging from 700 euros for a minor offence to 3,000 euros for a very serious offence.
Huércal-Overa Town Council has a Punto Limpio, a controlled waste collection area, located in the municipal warehouse next to the cemetery where individuals can deposit rubble, wood and furniture, pruning and gardening waste and bulky packaging free of charge. As well as special waste: used domestic oils, batteries, photographic and radiographic material, aerosols, batteries, electrical and electronic material, paints, solvents, fluorescents and waste electrical appliances.
There is also an area for selective collection with specific containers for glass, paper and cardboard, packaging and textiles. The clean point is open from Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 14:30h and from 15:00 to 21:00h and on Saturdays from 09:00 to 14:00h.
The councillor for Services, Andrés Sánchez, reminds residents of “the importance of depositing waste in a controlled manner, for which the Punto Limpio is available, caring for and protecting the environment as well as the image of our municipality”. It is regrettable to see situations such as those that have been occurring in recent weeks in which some people leave waste in places such as streams or taking advantage of the proximity of other containers. For this reason, the Consistory is appealing to the public to cooperate to ensure that this does not happen.
