Andalusian Regional Government awards the contract for the drafting of the project for the first phase of the restoration of the Castle of Vélez Blanco
The delegate for Culture, Eloísa Cabrera, explains that this phase of the project aims to make rooms or rooms that are currently closed open to visitors.

The territorial delegate for Development, Infrastructures, Territorial Planning, Culture and Historical Heritage, Eloísa Cabrera, has announced the award of the contract for the drafting of the basic and execution project for the conservation of the first phase of the Castle of Vélez Blanco. The cost of the study exceeds 141,000 euros. The conservation work will have a budget of two million euros, which will be co-financed by the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development and EAFRD funds. The drafting team has two and a half months to present the basic project and another two and a half months for the execution project. The duration of the work in this first phase will be 15 months.

Cabrera explained that the scope of the project includes the roofs, where specific repairs will be carried out, the restoration of the wooden walkway that gives access to the palace roofs, the elimination of the problems of lack of watertightness on the terrace of the Torre del Homenaje and the parapets. In addition, the elements of the ramparts of the Albarrana Tower will be consolidated, as well as the ashlars on the back of the toilets of the ramparts.

In the Torre del Homenaje, the restoration and conservation of its façades will be carried out, as well as the consolidation and/or replacement of the forging of the Sala de la Armería (Armoury Hall). The restoration of the wooden beam floors in the sacrificial forging (East Gallery) and the restoration of the crowning of the walls in the same area will be carried out. In addition, work will be carried out on the conservation of the walls and vaults inside the Tower. Corrective measures will be carried out on the staircases and protective railings.

The work also includes the noble rooms and other rooms open to visitors, where work will be carried out in the monument presentation room, toilets and entrance hall, the chambers and the access area to them. The Wardrobe room, the rooms of the Triumph of Caesar, of the Labours of Hercules, of the Dressing Room, of the Ladies, Oratory, First Cube and Second Cube will be other of the interventions to be carried out. The delegate for Culture, Eloísa Cabrera, explained that “the galleries in the main courtyard will be affected by small, one-off interventions, as well as the main staircase”. Basic access and use measures will be carried out at the entrances to the first enclosure.

In the Albarrana Tower and the adjoining towers, maintenance and conservation work will be carried out on the staircases and on the interior walls of the terrace and parapet. In addition, the restoration of the parts of the kitchen-fireplace on level 3 of the Espolón Norte, and improvements to the carpentry and fall protection must also be added.

The delegate for Culture and Historical Heritage, Eloísa Cabrera, announced that the first phase of these works will be put out to tender by the end of the year. She also highlighted the important investment effort of the Junta de Andalucía in the Castle of Vélez Blanco, to return it to the splendour it should never have lost.

PHASE II

The next phase of the project to be tackled later, in collaboration with the Andalusian Marble Businessmen’s Association, will be the reconstruction of the courtyard of the Castle of Vélez Blanco. In 1904 the Renaissance atrium was dismantled to form part of the private home of the tycoon George Blumenthal in New York. After his death, it was installed in the Metropolitan Museum. The intervention will be based on the principle of historical veracity and will reproduce the Renaissance atrium and its main staircase using 3D scans. This will require an investment of 3,092,862.10 euros to be executed with ERDF funds.

PHASE III

After the faithful recreation of the courtyard of the Castle of Vélez Blanco, the last phase of the enhancement programme will be the intervention on the exterior of the fortress to restore and conserve the envelope, make environmental and landscape improvements and monumental lighting. Inside, the facilities will be completed, culminating with the museumisation for the understanding and interpretation of the monument. The conservation, landscaping, monumental lighting and musealisation works have a budget of 3,750,000 euros, which will be financed with ERDF funds.
