A San Silvestre delayed by the pandemic took place last Sunday in Albox.

This Sunday 15th May, the XV San Silvestre de Albox “Memorial María Carmona” was held, where more than 150 runners gathered on a sunny morning and with participants in all categories; minis, benjamín, alevín, infantil, junior, senior and veterans A and veterans B.

The Geocycle company, one of the sponsors of the race, set up a stand to inform about healthy lifestyle habits – taking care of yourself is the healthiest habit. The stand was also used to provide refreshments to all runners at the end of the race, with water, fruit and nuts. The company also gave all registered runners a T-shirt and some anti-stress balls.

At 11 a.m. the youngest runners took off, with a high turnout of more than 50 children in all categories. After a minute’s silence in memory of María Carmona, the 4.1 km race of the XV San Silvestre ‘Memorial María Carmona’ began at 12 o’clock.

This year the solidarity of all the participants has reigned, as they have collaborated by donating food for the two parish Caritas of Albox, reaching 400 kilos of non-perishable food for the most needy, also with the registration fee of 5 euros the runners have collaborated with the Spanish Association for the Fight Against Cancer -EECC- of Albox.

The originality and creativity of the costumes were also rewarded with prizes of several shoulders for the best runners and costumed groups who finished the solidarity race. In addition to making the race a charity race every year, it is also becoming a fun race, the lure was tempting, half a dozen gifts in kind were given to the groups of runners who participated in costume, among them, 4 ham shoulders, several Christmas hampers.

In the general male category the winner was Antonio Belmonte followed by Blas Jesús Quiles Parra and Fran Romero. In the female category the winner was the athlete from Pulpileña Marisa López Cortés, second was the athlete from Alboja Maria Dolores López Sánchez and third was Nuria Trinidad Reche, also from Alboja.

The organisation of this sporting event has been the responsibility of the Somos Albojenses Association with the collaboration and support of the Sports Department of the Albox Town Hall in the organisation and in the smooth running of this event has also collaborated with the Local Police of Albox and the more than 30 volunteers who participate in it.
