The Port Authority strengthens its strategy for attracting cruise ships in order to boost the economy of the city.

So much so that the Port of Cartagena counts on the arrival of ships every month of the year.

Hence, it is reaffirmed as a Winterless Port.

But it is perhaps the luxury tourism which, increasingly, scale positions choosing the city of Cartagena as a stopover destination on their trips by sea.

The president of the Port Authority, Yolanda Muñoz, considers that “Cartagena has possibilities of enjoyment 365 days a year and also offers unique and exclusive experiences that, after all, is what most tourists who visit us demand, including those considered as Luxury and Premium”.

Luxury and extra-luxury ships such as the Celebrity Egde, Scenic Exclipse, Viking or the Queen Victoria already include Cartagena in their European itineraries.

However, it is perhaps the luxury tourism that, more and more, is choosing the metropolis of Cartagena as a stopover destination in its ocean voyages.

Luxury and extra-luxury ships such as the Celebrity Egde, Scenic Exclipse, Viking (Jupiter, Venus or Mars) or the Queen Victoria already include Cartagena in their European itineraries. Now, it will be the cruise ship Star Pride (from the Bahamas) who, for the first time, will disembark in the port town attracted by the countless attractions that gives the already considered tourist capital of the territory of Murcia.

Today one of the 6 luxury yachts of the prestigious shipping company Windstar Cruises, with capacity for 312 passengers and a crew of 145 members, calls at Cartagena on an itinerary of 11 days along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coast.

The president of the Port Authority is proud that “increasingly, Cartagena is the port of choice for luxury cruise ships because, if in itself, the arrival of ships is a boost to the economy of a town, this kind of cruises are an added plus given the high purchasing power of its passengers”.

This has a lot to do with the task of trade promotion that the Trade Development Department of the APC makes of Cartagena and the area along with the City Council and the Autonomous Society.

However, finally, what causes the tourist to choose Cartagena as a stopover is the proximity of the Port to the city and the waterfront with which it is located.

The Plaza Más Grande plan will be key in this commitment to the Port-City union because it will not only turn the Port into a place of coexistence in the daily life of the Cartageneros, but will facilitate the accession of those who disembark in Cartagena so that they can become part of the social, recreational, sporting and cultural life of the port town.

The president explains that “shipping companies, and primarily the luxury ones, ask us again and again native experiences and that passengers are immersed in our essence of the town,” and incorporates that “with the current festival of Cartagena Port of Flavors or with the reception in several situations makes an expedition of Carthaginians and Romans in the cruise pier, the tourist is itself fascinated and wants to know much more of this wonderful metropolis.

Although the Port of Cartagena has seen an exponential increase in the number of cruise passengers over the last few years, the APC’s tactics also continue to be aimed at attracting luxury sector cruisers with the objective of having Luxury and Premium passengers visit Cartagena and contribute to boosting the local economy.

“We wish to accomplish our task of being the economic engine of Cartagena and the territory, not only by developing commercial activity, but also by attracting and retaining tourists. Our objective is that the area of Murcia, starting with Cartagena, manages to benefit from a passenger with high purchasing power that makes purchases, exclusive excursions and enjoys the rich gastronomy that we have.

The Port of Cartagena has increased this year 2022 in well over 40% the number of luxury cruises compared to the year before the pandemic disease.
