On the night of Thursday 23 to the early hours of 24 June, the neighbourhoods and districts of Cartagena hosted the celebration of the traditional Noche de San Juan, which has resulted in more than 50 interventions by the Fire Department.
From early evening it was necessary to control small bush fires due to firecrackers. There were around thirty bush fires which were quickly brought under control.
In addition, fire-fighters had to extinguish a fire in a garage in El Estrecho de San Ginés, as well as a fire in a garden in El Carmolí.
In terms of damage to street furniture, the removal of containers in the previous hours in the most problematic areas meant that only 20 containers were burnt.
On the other hand, it was necessary to act in a small forest fire in El Monte Calvario, in two trees that burned in Montoya and San José Obrero streets; a palm tree in Carmen Conde and a tree in Monroy street, next to the Museum of Glass.
With regard to the bonfires, “there are no incidents to report, as they were held normally despite the wind, both in the neighbourhoods and in the councils that celebrated their patron saint festivals such as El Albujón, among others,” said the councillor for Security, Juan Pedro Torralba.
Among other incidents, firefighters searched around three o’clock in the morning for a cat that had fled as a result of the noise and had hidden in a pipe, but finally came out by his own means.
In another order of things, there were altercations in the new Cartagena, Molinos Marfagones, and José María de la Puerta area, where police intervention was necessary.
The Councillor for Security, Juan Pedro Torralba, thanked the Fire Department, Civil Protection, Local Police, National Police and Civil Guard for their work. “The night of San Juan is always complicated and due to the coordinated action of all the bodies involved, there were no serious incidents and the altercations that occurred were resolved as quickly as possible”.
The councillor also stressed that without the previous work of the parks and gardens brigades and the mobile park, the UTE de Jardines, as well as Hidrogea and Lhicarsa, the incidents could have been much greater, for which he thanked them for their actions.
