The Cosentino Group, a world leader in the production and distribution of innovative and sustainable surfaces for architecture and design, publishes its Sustainability Report 2021. This document represents a significant and profound evolution with respect to its previous Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Reports, applying a comprehensive and transversal vision of Sustainability based on ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) principles.
Under this new structure, the company continues to fulfil its commitment to transparency and accountability in terms of economic, social, environmental and ethical sustainability to its own employees and other stakeholders. The document, which complies with the international standard of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), also reflects the company’s performance in its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.
Under the goal of leaving the maximum and best possible footprint on people, and the minimum on the planet, Cosentino reflects in this renewed report the strategic levers, as well as the latest milestones and achievements, in social, environmental and Good Governance matters. These pillars are based on a consolidated business model with financial solvency, as reflected in the economic results of the last financial year, and based on innovation and R&D, production efficiency, circular economy, training and social action. But above all, it is based on the strength and high competitiveness of the company’s entire human team.
Sustainability and environmental management (Environmental)
This area groups together some of Cosentino’s main current projects, and involved a total investment in 2021 of close to €30 million in both environmental assets and environmental improvement expenses. With consolidated milestones such as the use of 99% reused water and Zero Discharge (with a daily treatment and reintroduction of 800,000m3), and 100% of electrical energy from renewable sources; or the development of sustainable products such as Dekton®, declared Carbon Neutral for its entire life cycle, and HybriQ+® technology for Silestone®, Cosentino demonstrates its commitment to the circular economy and the reduction of its carbon footprint with facts.
In addition to these achievements, new milestones were reached last year, such as the production of more than 3 million m2 of slabs with recycled or recovered material, almost a third of the total. Thanks to its own Waste Management Plant, the company managed 400,000 tonnes of solid waste in 2021, of which 13% was recovered, increasing the consumption of recycled raw materials by 26%.
But the company does not stop here, given that since last year it has been implementing a new industrial energy model based on renewables and self-consumption, which also extends to water resource management. In the coming weeks Cosentino will activate the largest industrial photovoltaic self-consumption installation in Spain on the ground with 20 MW of peak power, and an approximate energy production capacity of 34 GWh/year, which will soon be joined by another installation based on panels on the roofs of its factories. In parallel, and also with a start-up scheduled for this year, Cosentino is building its own Urban Wastewater Regeneration Station (ERAR), which will give a new life to the unusable water discharged by the municipalities near its Industrial Park.
Job creation and contribution to society (Social)
In parallel to innovation and sustainability, commitment to people is Cosentino’s main value, understanding that its human capital is the company’s greatest asset. Again in 2021, Cosentino maintained its commitment to quality employment, increasing its workforce by almost 700 new jobs to reach 5,425 employees at the end of last year. From 76 different nationalities, the rate of permanent contracts of its workforce rose to 91%.
This commitment to generate prosperity and growth is also projected to the communities where Cosentino is present, highlighting its closest environment located in the region of Almanzora and Almeria. Cosentino contributes in a pioneering way to education and training, both with the promotion of FP Dual programmes carried out in its facilities, as well as with the actions developed through its Eduarda Justo Foundation. It also supports disciplines such as architecture, design, sport and gastronomy with a multitude of collaborations and sponsorships, and promotes art and culture thanks to the activities of the Ibáñez-Cosentino Art Foundation. Finally, the company also undertook a volume of more than one million euros in direct donations to various entities and associations, 20% more than in 2020.
Responsible and transparent management (Governance)
All this roadmap and management based on ESG criteria, progresses under the integration and transparent communication with the employees themselves, and with the entire value chain of the company formed by suppliers, customers and partners. Responsible governance that promotes the development of talent with recruitment and management programmes such as Acelera, Ingenia and Impulsa, that invests more and more each year in health and safety, and that promotes equality and diversity, reaching 22% of women in management positions by 2021, or 50% on its Board of Directors.
A performance that, for yet another year, has proactively contributed to the achievement of some of the main Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), both primary and secondary, such as SDG 3 (Health and Wellbeing), SDG 8 (Decent Work and economic growth), SDG 9 (Infrastructure and innovation), SDG 12 (Sustainable consumption and production), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 17 (Partnerships to achieve the goals), among others.
