Neighbourhood concern over the visual impact of Line 400 on the Santuario del Saliente

The visual impact from the esplanade of the Santuario del Saliente on the 400 kV line would be one of the weak points of RED ELECTRICA’s environmental impact report.

The platform Salvemos la Sierra de las Estancias, in a press release, assures that “the power line – 400 kv – will not pass 7 kilometres from the Saliente Sanctuary”.

According to this group, the line will pass 2.8 kilometres from the Sanctuary, an emblematic place from whose esplanade the valley that precedes the town of Albox can be seen.

In the letter, they state that “in an interview with the press in February 2022 by Jorge Juan Jiménez, head of REE in Andalusia, he stated that the line would pass more than 7 kilometres from the Saliente Sanctuary. From the Platform we state that once again Jorge Juan is lying. The electric transport line-electric highway will pass 2.8 kilometres from the Saliente Sanctuary, causing an enormous visual impact on the Saliente Sanctuary and its surroundings. From the esplanade of the Saliente Sanctuary, some 10 kilometres of power line will be visible, which we hope thousands of devotees of the Pequeñica will not have to see”.

“From the Platform, taking advantage of the stay of the Pequeñica these days in Vélez Rubio, we are asking for NO to the 400 kv line through the Sierra de las Estancias, through our municipalities, which would do so much damage to the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Saliente and her pilgrimage along all the paths that year after year the pilgrims travel in the month of September towards the meeting with the Virgin.

Massive attendance of neighbours at the convivial days held in the last month and a half against the 400 kv line.

Neighbourhood opposition to the construction of the 400 kv overhead transmission line with towers of more than 80 metres high through virgin territory, such as the Sierra de las Estancias, is growing every day and is demonstrated by events such as those held in the last month in Las Pocicas (ALBOX), Los Cerricos (ORIA) or Santa Rosa in the Rambla del Saliente (ALBOX).

The platform Salvemos la Sierra de la Estancias has organised these days of coexistence to explain to the neighbours the progress made in the fight against the current route of the 400kv line, which in principle will cross and literally kill the countryside in the north of Almeria. A manifesto was read and a bar was set up. The town council of Oria collaborated on this occasion by providing a marquee. Numerous residents of Oria, Los Cerricos, CHirivel, Taberno de Vélez Rubio, the area of Las Pocicas and El Saliente and Albox, attended these days of conviviality.

“We have been able to count on the presence of the mayors of Oria Marcos Reche, of Taberno Antonio Martos, Deputy Mayor of Vélez Rubio José Manuel Marrero, the Deputy Mayor of Albox Agustín Carmona, as well as councillors of different political colours from the four municipalities.

That the purpose of the meetings is to demand and protest against the publication in the B.O.P. of Almeria on 22/11/21/21 of the date of publication in the B.O.P. of Almeria dated 22/11/21 of the List of Assets and rights affected 400 kV overhead power transmission line double circuit Baza-Ribina, included as an Annex in the Announcement of the Industry and Energy Unit of the Government Subdelegation in Almeria, with the intention of making clear to all agencies involved, our most radical opposition to the construction of the 400 kv line, as this project seriously threatens ecological agriculture, will have a serious environmental impact, and will not only affect the landscape, but will also have negative consequences on protected species of fauna and flora, which have not been taken into account in the Environmental Impact Study. It will only provoke further depopulation, if possible, in the villages in the north of the province, as it will also harm the development of rural tourism, as a means of economic growth in the area.

A few weeks ago, the platform “SALVEMOS LA SIERRA DE LAS ESTANCIAS”, together with the Town Councils of Albox, Oria, Taberno and Vélez Rubio, denounced to the European Commission that the Plan for the Development of the Electricity Transmission Network 2015-2020, approved by Agreement of the Council of Ministers on 16 October 2015 (BOE no. 254, 23.10. 2015), commonly known as the 2015-2020 Energy Plan, violated Directive 2001/42 on the environmental assessment of plans and programmes, and Directives 2003/4/EC and 2003/35/EC on public access to environmental information and public participation in drawing up plans and programmes, in that, for its approval, it was not subject to the strategic environmental assessment procedure provided for in Law 21/2013, of 9 December, on environmental assessment (hereinafter, Law 21/2013).
