The project will provide the municipality with a new tourist attraction while recovering the cultural and ethnographic heritage of the region.

The Provincial Council of Almería has approved a project that will boost tourism, opportunities and employment in the municipality of Suflí. The project involves the refurbishment and conversion of the Old Olive Oil Mill into an Oil Interpretation Centre.

The project plans to work on a 200 square metre plot of land by refurbishing the old oil mill and adapting it to this new use, limiting itself to the civil works and excluding the restoration of the objects and machinery inside.

The vice-president and deputy for Development, Ángel Escobar, highlighted that the Governing Board has awarded the contract for the execution of the works and pointed out that “this building will be recovered to form part of the cultural and ethnographic heritage of Suflí with the aim of contributing to the dissemination of the cultural values of the municipality, while at the same time serving as a tourist attraction”.

In this sense, he detailed that this building will become completely public and open to the public: “We congratulate the Town Council for committing to infrastructures that will create employment, opportunities and a new tourist attraction not only for Suflí, but for the whole region. We are proud to promote a project that will improve the future of the residents of Suflí”.

This project has a budget of 200,000 euros, which will be financed with investments from the 2020-23 Provincial Plans. Escobar assured that, thanks to the measure put in place by the Provincial Government to deduct the reduction in the awarding of contracts to municipal bodies, the Town Council will save practically half of its contribution.

The rehabilitation of the Almazara includes all the necessary actions for the restoration of the Almazara building, among which the following stand out:

Replacement and repair of the traditional roof slab of the three bays.
Repair of cracks and fissures in the load-bearing walls. Pecking and restoration of walls.
Interior cladding. Plastering and painting.
Replacement and/or repair of wooden carpentry.
Replacement of flooring.
Urbanisation of the rest of the site, terracing and access stairs.
Purpose of the project

The Almazara has become obsolete due to the passage of time and changes in the means of production and this project will allow it to be used by the whole community. In this case, these works are aimed at making the building visitable as a place of ethnological and historical interest.

From the analysis of the building and its current morphology, it can be seen that it has undergone a series of modifications over the years that have altered its original configuration. The main purpose of these modifications has been to adapt the interior of the mill for the installation of various mechanical devices to move the millstones. This, the movement of the millstones to crush the olives, is the great mechanical difficulty encountered in the primitive mills, and there were several systems for the propulsion of these mechanisms.

The introduction of this new, more powerful engine seems to have been associated with a series of works to transform the original architecture, but also with other works, such as the replacement of arches with lintels in the openings in the load-bearing walls, in order to install a metal structure which, together with a series of gears, served to transmit the power of the new engine to the millstones.

This project aims not only to safeguard the structural integrity of the building, but also to recover the original volume and characteristics of the building.
