The beaches of Cala Magre and Cala Dentoles of the Regional Park of Calblanque, Peña del Águila and Monte de las Cenizas registered last night the first attempt of loggerhead turtle nesting on the coasts of the Region of Murcia during the summer of 2022, according to sources of the regional Government in a statement.
Specifically, volunteers from the Calblanque Regional Park spotted early in the morning two tracks of 8 and 9 metres long, one of which (the one located in Cala Magre) ended in a chamber (a hole in the sand where turtles lay their eggs). The size of the tracks leads us to believe that they are the same specimen.
When the turtle was found, the area was marked with buoys as a first security measure and then the 112 emergency telephone number was called, as well as the staff of the Calblanque Regional Park. Environmental agents were also sent to the site.

After analysing the state of the nest, it was found that there were no eggs inside it, so the protocol has been deactivated, and it has not been ruled out that attempts may be made again in the next few days.
The Community is reminding the population of the need to exercise extreme caution on the beaches during the night and early hours of the day, when loggerhead turtles approach the beaches in an attempt to lay their eggs. In addition to this, there is essential advice on how to avoid frustrating the attempts, such as avoiding disturbing the animal, avoiding noise or dazzling lights, and calling 112 or the local police in the event of a sighting.
