Purchena and the Almeria Provincial Council join forces for the return of a new edition of the Moorish Games
The event, declared of Andalusian Tourist Interest, will be held, after four years, from 28 to 30 July.

The Provincial Council of Almeria and the Purchena Town Council have joined forces once again for a new edition of the Aben Humeya Moorish Games to be held from 29 to 30 July in the municipality. The event, declared of traditional tourist interest, returns after four years of absence thanks to the institutional union, volunteering and the sponsorship of local companies (Omya and Gestagua).

The Patio del Mandarino was the setting chosen to unveil this year’s programme by the deputy for Culture and Cinema, Manuel Guzmán, as well as the mayor, Juan Miguel Tortosa, the Culture technician, Manolo Sola, and the head of Sports, Antonio Lara, who explained the exhibition of two modalities performed by Juan Manuel Agudo: Burxana Stone Lifting and Brick Holding.

The deputy for Culture and Cinema emphasised that “it is a reason to celebrate to be able to present one of the most important activities in the province which combines history, sport, culture and tourism and which makes the town of Purchena a point of reference in the province”.

Similarly, Guzmán invited the people of Almeria to enjoy cultural and sporting activities, as well as recreations to highlight something that happened more than 450 years ago, the Moorish Rebellion, and that Purchena has managed to squeeze out like no one else. The Purchena Town Council is characterised by its eagerness for cultural activities, as a town with dimensions that is committed to culture, traditions and sport”.

For his part, the mayor has expressly thanked the support of the Diuputación de Almería and the sponsors (Omya and Gestagua): “Without their contributions it would be very difficult to celebrate the Moorish Games”. He also highlighted the “enthusiasm and fervour” of the people for the return of these festivities, which are an example thanks to the high level of volunteering and participation of the residents.

Tortosa pointed out that “the Moorish Games are an example of local development, giving value to a part of history and turning it into a tourist product”.

For his part, Manuel Sola stressed that it is a historical, cultural and sporting event that is based on an event that took place more than 450 years ago thanks to the institutions and thanks to the volunteers “who make up almost 20% of the population”.

Sola recalled that “the programme takes us, in each of its days, to a town five centuries ago, on the one hand through a historical staging and through sporting events of Olympic descent and others recovered and documented as the oldest in Spain, as well as cultural activities that can rarely be enjoyed in our towns”.

Sola has assured that each of the days are special and has invited the people of Almeria to immerse themselves in history and visit the souks of crafts and gastronomy and the spectacular events that reveal the past and history of Purchena.

Antonio Lara was in charge of describing two of the most spectacular events in the programme, of which Juan Manuel Agudo gave an exhibition: the lifting of the Burxana stone, weighing around 70 kilos, and the holding up of bricks made from the region’s white marble.

Among the sporting events and exhibitions were the Moorish Horse Race, the weight throwing event ‘José Luis Martínez Trophy’, in homage to the thrower from Badajoz; Archery, throwing of Cantos and sling shot, Moorish Wrestling, Brick holding and Burxana stone lifting, the Urban Half Urban Legua Gruesa, Triple Jump and Speed, among others.
