The Provincial Council and the Bishopric of the Diocese of Almeria are going to renovate the historical and cultural heritage of fifteen churches in 12 municipalities in the province of Almeria thanks to provincial investments. The president of the Provincial Institution, Javier A. García, today handed over to the bishop, Antonio Gómez Cantero, the resolution of the 300,000 euros in financial aid that will allow the improvement of these monumental buildings, which are one of the main tourist attractions of the small municipalities.
The Ermita de Fuencaliente is one of the temples that will benefit from the greatest investment this year thanks to the line of aid that the Diputación grants to the Diocese of Almería. The ceremony was also attended by the deputy of the Presidency, Fernando Giménez, as well as the acting mayoress of Serón, Caridad López, the vicar general, Ignacio López, and the archpriest Antonio Jesús Saldaña.

The president of the Diputación was proud to give effect to a grant that “fulfils the objectives” of equal opportunities in all corners of the province and to fix the population: “Churches are one of the main monuments and tourist resources of our municipalities. Their enhancement is linked to the revitalisation of tourism and, therefore, to the creation of employment and wealth. From the Diputación we want to collaborate with the Church for its maintenance, both for its religious and spiritual value as well as its monumental value”.
In this regard, Javier A. García pointed out that 10 of the churches are located in municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants and 8 of them in municipalities with less than 5,000. The president has assured that since the Diputación recovered this collaboration with the Bishopric, “investments worth 2.5 million euros have been made through more than 140 actions”.
For all these reasons, he concluded by “thanking the bishopric for its immense work through Cáritas Diocesana, channelling solidarity, as well as for the spiritual support of the people of Almeria and for the maintenance of the beautiful churches that ennoble our province”.
For his part, the bishop of the Diocese of Almeria thanked the Provincial Council of Almeria for “caring for the smaller Christian communities” which by their nature need the “backing, support and support” of the institutions.
In this sense, the bishop highlighted the “fluid” collaboration between the Provincial Institution and the Diocese of Almeria, which is an example and worthy of thanks and highlighting for its strong support. and need that care from the institutions.
