The Civil Guard seize 20 kilos of octopus in Mazarrón
The seized octopus, once declared fit for consumption, shall be donated to charity.

The Guardia Civil of the Region of Murcia, in the framework of the ‘Annual Plan of Integral Control of Fishing Activities’ (PACIAP), has developed in Mazarrón a device established to pursue poaching of octopus specimens of sizes below those permitted, which has resulted in the seizure of 20 kilos of octopus.

The Seprona of the Benemérita has filed seven complaints for infractions under Law 2/2007, of Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Region of Murcia, according to sources from the Armed Institute.

The operation began when the Guardia Civil had certain suspicions about the arrival at the fishing port of Mazarrón of undersized octopus pieces, so discreet devices were established to identify the possible offenders.

In this way, Seprona agents located a professional fishing boat with 20 kilos of octopus which infringed both the size and the obligation to pass the fish products through the fish market, for which the corresponding complaints were made.

During the same operation, the civil guards observed how the crew of another professional fishing boat, on noticing the police presence, threw overboard a basket which was later found to contain undersized octopus, for which they were also reported.

The alleged illegal activities have been reported to the Regional Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment (Fisheries and Aquaculture Service) of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia (CARM), whose inspection staff supported the Guardia Civil during the actions.

The octopus specimens immobilised and deposited in the Fish Market of the Fishing Port of Mazarrón, once considered fit for consumption, will be donated to charity.
