Huércal-Overa will renovate the lighting in the town centre and 30 villages thanks to the Provincial Council's Efficiency Plan
Provincial Council calls for tenders for a project with an investment of more than 1.7 million euros.

Huércal-Overa is to renovate the lighting in 30 villages and the town centre thanks to the Efficiency Plans managed by the Almeria Provincial Council. The Governing Board of the Provincial Institution has approved the tender for a project that will reduce light pollution, CO2 consumption and promote savings in the municipal electricity bill.

With an investment of 1,797,000 euros, this is the second project of this kind to be promoted by the Provincial Council in the municipality. Both the first and the second are part of the Energy Efficiency Plans which are 80% financed by the European Union’s ERDF funds (IDAE), with the Almeria Provincial Council contributing 15% and the local councils contributing the remaining 5%.

This will complete the renovation of 2,232 light points that form part of the public lighting system of the municipality, as well as 63 control centres, which are in addition to those renovated with the FEDER EELL Plan 2018.

These projects will make it possible to meet the objectives of saving energy, as LED-type luminaires require less electrical power; reducing carbon dioxide emissions, thus complying with international regulations such as the Kyoto protocol; and reducing light pollution.

The vice-president and deputy for Development, Ángel Escobar, highlighted the importance of a programme managed by the council “with funds from the European Union, which is fundamental for the future of generations to come”. “The protection of the environment is a maxim on which we must work together, society and institutions. For this, institutional collaboration is key and serves as an indispensable support to our municipalities”.

In addition, the deputy added that, “these installations improve safety with lighting adapted to the needs of each of the municipalities and considerably reduce the councils’ bills. This means that the councils will be able to use these savings to invest in improving services and infrastructure for their residents.

The Mayor of Huércal-Overa, Domingo Fernández, emphasised that “through this action we are completing the transition to LED lighting throughout the municipality. It is almost 1.8 million euros with which we continue to work on improving energy efficiency, which will benefit our municipality. An improvement that we started a few years ago and that has included different phases that are now completed with all the districts with this action managed by the Diputación de Almería, through the Improvement of Energy Efficiency of the outdoor lighting installations of Huércal-Overa. Having then already 100% of our municipality with Led”.

Fernandez has pointed out that “we are working with various projects, the renewal of LED lighting throughout the municipality in addition to improvements in pavements, bike lanes, safe school road and traffic management, works that make Huércal-Overa a more environmentally sustainable municipality”.

44 million euros in Energy Efficiency

This last project is part of the Low Carbon Economy Plan which is involving 28 million euros and which is in addition to the 32 actions that were promoted in 2018 with 16 million euros.

The aim of this line of the ERDF Operational Programme is to continue modernising the province’s lighting systems with the resulting environmental and economic benefits for each of the municipalities.

In the case of Huércal-Overa, once this project has been implemented, around 2.8 million euros will have been invested in improving the lighting networks throughout the municipality.
