
The Local Government Board of the City Council of San Javier has approved the tender for the works Plaza al Mar and its connection, in La Manga del Mar Menor, which will involve the remodelling of the Zoco Levante square and Castillos del Mar square and its connection, with a budget of 1,964,037 euros and a completion period of four months. The works, which are being tendered by San Javier City Council through an agreement with the Ministry of Development and Infrastructures of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, are part of the EDUSI «La Manga Abierta 365», promoted by the Region of Murcia and co-financed 80% by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and 20% by the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia.
The actions, which seek the development and promotion of natural areas by recovering areas that are currently deteriorated and underused, focus on the current Castillos de Mar and Zoco squares, starting with some necessary demolition and replacement of drainage, supply and irrigation. In both cases, pedestrianisation with new paving will predominate, and aeronautical-themed children’s games and cross-training games will be included, as well as the creation of new green areas. The work, which includes drainage and rainwater drainage, will also involve the renovation of the lighting with LED technology, new street furniture, such as benches and litter bins, bicycle parking areas and pergolas to provide shade at strategic points in the new squares.
The project also improves the accesses from Gran Vía and the connection of the squares with the existing promenade sections, and a new wooden walkway of 1,763 square metres, of which 1,637 metres serve as a link between the two squares and the rest as the entrance to the beaches. The ultimate goal of this type of actions called «Plaza al Mar», which have been included in the EDUSI «La Manga Abierta 365», is to introduce the maritime landscape into the area. is to introduce the maritime landscape and the natural environment into the urban scene.
