The mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, reiterates the request for check dams in the Rambla de Cobatillas.
José Miguel Luengo stressed the importance of these works for the municipality and for the Mar Menor, after the municipal coordination meeting held at the San Javier Town Hall in the event of a possible DANA.

The Mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo has reiterated today the need for the construction of the retaining dikes of the Rambla de Cobatillas to the Ministry for Ecological Transition. At the end of the municipal coordination meeting in the event of torrential rains, which took place this morning at the Town Hall of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, announced the request for a meeting at the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura to know “in what situation are these works so important for the municipality and for the Mar Menor”.

José Miguel Luengo recalled that the retaining dikes of the Rambla de Cobatillas were introduced in the Plan de Vertido 0 al Mar Menor by the City Council of San Javier without to date have been executed. The Mayor of San Javier remarked that despite the investments made by both the City Council and the regional government in the improvement of drainage and rainwater collectors, “there is no pipe that can accommodate the torrential downpour of the wadi in episodes of torrential rains”, so he claimed the need to contain the water that is generated 15 kilometres upstream by dams, to minimise the effects of its passage through the municipality.

The mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo recalled some of the new infrastructures with which the municipality could face possible new episodes of torrential rains, such as the drainage improvement works at the roundabout and pedestrian crossing of Pozo Aledo. Similarly, rainwater collectors have been built and drainage has been improved in the Los Pescadores neighbourhood, Avenida Miguel Blanco, Calle Calderón de la Barca and Avenida Aviación Española. Drainage capacity has also been increased in Jabalina street, where the car park in the rambla has been purchased to continue improving drainage.

Other drainage improvement works have been carried out on the Adela Sánchez roundabout in the south of the municipality and Gran Canaria street. At the same time, work is currently underway to increase the capacity of the San Javier treatment plant, the north and south collectors, which will be awarded again in the next few days, and the drainage improvement of the Vinco path, which is awaiting a tender. On the other hand, the renovation works on Balsicas Avenue, with the Next Generation funds that the San Javier Town Hall will receive, include green areas for a sustainable urban drainage system. The mayor, José Miguel Luengo recalled that in episodes of torrential rains, the casing that the regional government has been carrying out in different sections of the sewerage network to prevent leaks will also be of great help.

Accompanied by the councillor for Public Services, María Dolores Ruiz, the mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo reported that the municipal services have been working for the last 15 days on cleaning gutters, scuppers and any passage of water to facilitate its channelling and avoid stagnation. Luengo pointed out that the coordination meeting is held periodically with the participation of Public Services, Local Police, Civil Protection, and the concessionary companies of the street cleaning service and the water and sewage service, to keep the action protocol fresh so that it can be activated at any time. The predictions about the possibility of the formation of DANAS in the Mediterranean during the month of September has led all municipal services to be on alert for a rapid response, said the mayor, who recalled that the official information on the incidents that may occur would be transferred by municipal means such as the facebook page and Telegram in addition to the local media.
