The Provincial Council is bringing the music of the Orquesta Joven de Almería (OJAL) and the Orquesta Ciudad de Almería (OCAL) to the municipalities of Tíjola, Laujar de Andarax, Olula del Río and Huércal-Overa. The OCAL concerts will take place this weekend, on 1 and 2 September, in Tíjola and Laujar, while the OCAL will offer its repertoire on 10 September in Olula del Río, and on 12 November in Huércal – Overa. All these performances are free entry until full capacity is reached.
The deputy for Culture and Cinema, Manuel Guzmán, explained that, after the success of last year’s circuit with the Orquesta Ciudad de Almería, this initiative will be resumed in 2022. In the case of the OJAL, the public will experience “a large-format concert that will undoubtedly delight all those who want to come to these two municipalities, promoting the talent of the youngest members of the Orquesta Ciudad de Almería”.
As for the OCAL, the deputy pointed out that “on Saturday 10 September, as is becoming customary, the OCAL will play in the City of Culture, one of the most important venues we have in the province of Almería. It will be a large-format concert that will also come to Huércal-Overa later on”.
For his part, Michael Thomas, conductor of the Orquesta Ciudad de Almería and the Orquesta Joven de Almería, said that “we are delighted to be in Tíjola and Laujar playing Spanish music by Ruperto Chapí, ‘El tambor de granaderos’, which is a lot of work for the great percussionists that the OJAL has, as well as the famous ‘Ninth Symphony of the New World’, which is complex, but the students have rehearsed it very well”.
Thomas also added that “we will also have the horn soloist of the OCAL, Paco Carmona, who will perform the fourth movement of Mozart’s horn concerto, the last movement, with the students. It is very special because he used to be the horn soloist of the OJAL”.
The OJAL will perform Dvorak’s New World Symphony and Arturo Márquez’s Danzón nº2. For its part, the OCAL will perform in Olula del Río Mózart’s Concerto for Horn and Orchestra No. 4, with soloist Francisco Carmona and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major, op. 92. While the programme in Huércal-Overa consists of Ravel’s Bolero, Pictures at an Exhibition by Musorgski and a selection from the Carmen Suite.
