San Javier announces its candidacy to host the headquarters of the Spanish Space Agency
The president, López Miras, and the mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, present the candidacy to host the Agency’s headquarters, which would occupy part of the old civil airport of San Javier.

The President of the Community, Fernando López Miras and the Mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo presented last Monday, in the Palace of San Esteban, the candidacy of the Region of Murcia to host the future Spanish Space Agency in San Javier. “Objectively there is no better place than San Javier in Spain to host this Agency”, said López Miras, who highlighted the coincidence of the characteristics offered by San Javier in relation to the requirements established in the call published by the Government of Spain on 5 October in the Official State Gazette (B.O.E.).
The presentation ceremony of San Javier’s candidacy as the headquarters of the Spanish Space Agency, which would be located in the facilities of the old airport, refurbished by AENA two years before its closure, was attended by the rectors of the universities of the Region, the employers’ association Croem, the Union of Cooperatives of the Region of Murcia and the company M Torres, a reference in the aeronautical sector, who expressed their express support for San Javier’s candidacy.
AENA refurbished the entire office area of the civil airport terminal, of which some 3,000 square metres would be needed to house a headquarters where some 70 highly qualified employees are expected to work. The choice of the site will be known in a month’s time and the start-up is scheduled for the first quarter of 2023, with an initial budget of 500 million euros.
In addition to the facilities “ready to be used on 1 January 2023”, San Javier’s candidacy meets the rest of the requirements, such as having a “maximum security environment, as it is located in a military zone with restricted access”. The proximity of an international airport would also be covered, with Corvera airport 25 minutes away and Alicante airport 45 minutes away, with the added value that the headquarters itself would be next to the AGA airport, which could be used if necessary, explained Luengo.
The Mayor of San Javier recalled the history of the location of Spanish aviation in the municipality of San Javier and the aeronautical tradition as a connection with this new project. “The values that led the State to decide to install the naval base in San Javier 100 years ago, and later the AGA in the same location, are still valid to house this headquarters”. José Miguel Luengo thanked the President, Fernando López Miras for the support of the regional government and all the social agents who supported San Javier’s candidacy with their presence and called for the social support of all the administrations and institutions of the Region of Murcia, “for a project that is beneficial for all”.
