The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia has arrested an individual for allegedly approaching two young women from behind in Torre Pacheco (Murcia) during the celebration of the patron saint festivities of the municipality and attempting to take them by force to an open field threatening them with a knife, with the aim of sexually assaulting them.
The Benemérita initiated this operation with the intention of clarifying the crime of attempted sexual assault and has resulted in the identification, location and arrest of the alleged perpetrator, only moments after committing the crime, according to sources of the aforementioned Corps in a statement.
The incident took place in the town centre of Torre Pacheco while the town’s patron saint festivities were being celebrated. Several members of the Civil Guard’s Citizen Security Prevention Unit, who were part of the security and public order system set up for this purpose to ensure the normal development of the event, were alerted to an attempted sexual assault on two young women in the vicinity of the fairgrounds.
The victims requested help after being approached by a man who, after grabbing them from behind and holding a large knife to the chest of one of them, attempted to forcibly move them to an open field near the site, where there is an abandoned building, with the intention of sexually assaulting them.
However, the women managed to get away from the alleged aggressor after a struggle and fled the place.
The civil guards collected all possible evidence about the perpetrator, such as his physical description and clothing. Once the assistance and protection of the victims had been guaranteed, they set up a specific search for the alleged perpetrator in the place where the events had taken place and in the surrounding area.
Initially, the Civil Guards set up a fence in the open field where the victims located the assault, which was a large, poorly lit and little-travelled area.
During the raid of the enclosed area, when accessing an abandoned building, the agents surrounded it, covering the possible exits. A few moments later, a man matching the detailed description provided by the victims was found inside the building and was hiding, apparently waiting for new victims to appear in the area.
When surprised by the Guardia Civil, the individual attempted to flee through one of the windows. The agents thwarted the escape thanks to the siege device previously established.
The suspect was arrested at the same place and the agents also seized the knife – a large knife – which he was carrying and which he allegedly used to intimidate the victims.
From the investigation carried out and the evidence obtained, it is clear that the rapid location and arrest of the alleged sex offender made it possible to frustrate the potential commission of new crimes of a sexual nature, given that the way in which he was caught indicated a tendency to commit further offences of a similar nature.
The detainee, who is alleged to have committed a crime of attempted sexual assault, and the proceedings have been placed at the disposal of the Court of Instruction of San Javier (Murcia).
