The Mayor, José Miguel Luengo, the Councillor for Public Services, María Dolores Ruiz and the Dean of the Official College of Architects of the Region of Murcia, María José Peñalver, today announced the opening of a national ideas competition for the comprehensive remodelling of the Parque Príncipe de Asturias, in Santiago de la Ribera. The competition, which will be open until 2 December next, has a base budget of 1 million euros and three prizes of 6000, 3000 and 1500 euros for the first three projects selected, the first of which will be awarded the contract.
The competition rules are available in the Profile of the Contractor, on the website of the City Council of San Javier, as well as on the website of the Official College of Architects of the Region of Murcia, recalled the Councillor for Public Services, Maria Dolores Ruiz, who said that the new park must adapt to the environment and become an accomplice of the two existing municipal buildings, among other security issues. The winning project is expected to be announced at the end of December and will be chosen by a jury made up of representatives from the City Council, the Murcia College of Architects and nationally renowned architects.
As was the case with the remodelling of the Almansa Park in San Javier, the College of Architects has once again collaborated with the San Javier Town Hall in the drafting and dissemination of the rules of the national competition of ideas “helping to ensure a transparent, open procedure in which the best idea wins,” said the mayor, José Miguel Luengo. The current park covers nearly 9,000 square metres, with well-established vegetation, a children’s area and a sports court, framed at the ends by a civic centre and a municipal centre for the elderly. “Now we want to have an impact on the landscape, on its integration with the urban fabric, generating a new unique space for coexistence, healthy and pleasant for all ages in the centre of the urban area of Santiago de la Ribera”, explained Luengo.
The Dean of the Architects’ Association, María José Peñalver, acknowledged the great possibilities offered by the park as a public space. “This great commitment deserves a great proposal and what better than to call a national competition so that the best teams of architects can present an infinite number of ideas, original and above all in consideration of the objectives of sustainable development”. The Dean pointed out that the park deserves to be reconsidered to adapt to the changing times and valued the testimonies of good architecture that Santiago de la Ribera has since its beginnings with the Barnuevo family through the architecture of the modern movement with the building of the Nautical Club, by Fernando Garrido, as an example, so that the new park could be one more testimony that puts in value the architecture in the area, she added.
The Mayor, José Miguel Luengo thanked the Official College of Architects of the Region of Murcia for their collaboration, which gave such a good result in the ideas competition for the Almansa Park, which is now expected to be repeated with the competition held for the renovation of the “Príncipe de Asturias” park, as well as for the construction of the future Municipal Security Centre, which is being worked on and will be announced soon.
