FICAL turns on the dream machine with Aitana Sánchez-Gijón in the starring role
The prestigious actress has received the award ‘Almería, Tierra de Cine’.

Cinema shines in Almería. If the 60s and 70s were the years that consolidated the province as a gigantic film set, with the beginning of this century this land was given a unique showcase to show the rest of the world the work of filmmakers, actors and producers thanks to the creation of the Almeria International Film Festival, FICAL. Mónica Randall, Guillermo Montesinos, Marta Vazgo, Fernando Cayo, Alicia Lorente, Ainara Landon, Judith Fernández, Anna Ruiz and Carla Ruiz, among others, as well as the filmmakers Carlota González-Adrio, Jesús Lloveras, Víctor Matellano and Luis Alegre and the communicator Gonzalo Miró, have walked the blue carpet of the Festival, with Aitana Sánchez Gijón as the main protagonist, very applauded by the audience when she received the award ‘Almería, Tierra de Cine’ from the hands of the president of the Provincial Council, Javier A. The gala, presented by the journalist Elena Sánchez, the music of the group ‘La, la, Love, You’ and the screening of the film ‘La maternal’, with the assistance of the actress Ángela Cervantes, has meant the beginning of the ‘shooting’ of ten days of good cinema and glamour in a festival that will reach more than 500 guests, from 18 to 27 November, who will participate in some of the more than one hundred activities, divided between conferences, round tables, master classes, meetings, presentations, workshops and the four galas. Film is art, industry and culture, and in our country it shines even brighter.

Although the official kick-off took place this very night, the truth is that emotions have been running high since mid-morning with the unveiling by Aitana Sánchez-Gijón of the star which, from today, will immortalise her forever on the Paseo de la Fama in Almería. The second came this evening at the inauguration ceremony itself, when she was called to the stage of the Auditorio Maestro Padilla to receive, with emotion, the ‘Almería, tierra de cine’ Award from the President of the Provincial Council, Javier A. Finally, she expressed her desire to return to film in Almería and shared the award with Mónica Randall and asked the whole audience to sing Happy Birthday to her. He left the stage exclaiming “long live Almería”. Aitana Sánchez-Gijón will be followed by the actresses Elena Anaya and María de Medeiros who have been chosen this year to receive the award ‘Almería, tierra de cine’ which will be presented to them on the 23rd and 26th, respectively.

As could not be otherwise, the three actresses have strong links with Almería, since, throughout their extensive careers, they have come to the province to participate in various filming. “In this line, Elena Sánchez has affirmed that “Almería is a land of cinema. “Its light and its landscapes are a natural set, unbeatable for narrating any story, and every year FICAL is transformed into an immense projection screen for the province of Almería for the whole planet. The Opening Gala began, of course, with cinema and the screening of the film “La maternal”.

Ten days of tributes, activities and novelties

The award ceremony will take place at the gala of the International Short Film Festival ‘Almería en corto’ on Friday 25th November.
