Cantorians prepare 4,000 dozens of wheelbarrows as a tribute to San Ant
They begin to cover up the façades and street furniture before the fire and gunpowder festival.

Around 4,000 dozens of wheelbarrows will be burnt on the evening of Monday 16th, during the celebration of the most popular festivities in Cantoria in honour of San Antón and San Cayetano. The Town Hall is already working together with the Cultural Association which nuclearises the wheelbarrows, in the preparation and protection of the façades of the buildings in those streets where the wheelbarrows will be thrown, which will be handled by some 400 residents.

The most eagerly awaited festivities by the people of Cantor, and also the most noisy, are about to begin. For this reason, the consistory has deployed a major device to remove the decorations and lighting that have decorated the streets during the past Christmas and begin to prepare the entire security operation around their patron saint festivities which are held just a week later. Prior to the festivities, on Saturday 14th there will be an exhibition of wheelbarrows in the town square, as well as a free barbecue for all those attending and dancing in the popular stall run by the San Antón and San Cayetano Cultural Association to raise the funds they use each year to prepare for the fiestas.

Monday will begin at 4 p.m. with a mass dedicated to the carter who will begin to throw the first gunpowder from 7 p.m. onwards. For the first hour and a half the protagonist will be the children’s wheelwright, up to the age of 16, then it will be the turn of the youngsters between 16 and 18 and from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. the wheelbarrows of all calibres will be thrown by the adult population. “It should be noted that despite the youth of some of these 400 forklift drivers, all of them have the CRE course in order to be able to handle this explosive material and, of course, all must be dressed and protected according to the regulations. These fiestas enjoy great popular support, but due to their own peculiarity it is very important for everyone to minimise any risk as far as possible and to prioritise safety by all means”, explains the mayoress Puri Sánchez.

On Tuesday 17th, the day of San Antón, a mass in honour of the saint will be celebrated with the blessing of animals, -all residents can bring their pets-, at the door of the church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen. Afterwards, the procession of the saint will begin, accompanied by the Cantoria Music Band, and the patron saints will be taken up to the hermitage. At 7 p.m. there will be a chocolate with churros in the square from where the fireworks display will announce the end of the fiesta.

In spite of the short time we have between Christmas and our “fiestas de las carretillas”, everything is practically ready for the new celebration, thanks also to the work done throughout the year by the Cultural Association itself and the collaboration of the neighbours themselves who, although they suffer some inconveniences, support our traditional way of living these fiestas. Although we know that the carters are very conscious of the material they handle, I would like to remind them of the importance of being well dressed and of respecting the timetables and calibres. I would like to wish everyone a happy festival and invite those who are not familiar with the fiestas to attend them because I am sure they will surprise them”, said the mayor.
