The Mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, the Councillor for Health, Isidoro Miñano and the Councillor for Social Rights, Estíbaliz Masegosa, this morning attended the inauguration of the new premises of MABS Cancer Support Foundation, an international charity that helps people with cancer in the Region of Murcia.
José Miguel Luengo and the president of the Foundation, Jacqueline Phillips, were in charge of cutting the symbolic ribbon that gives access to the premises, located on the road from San Javier to San Pedro del Pinatar, near the El Pino industrial estate, where it will be open from Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm.
A large number of people were waiting to enter the shop which sells all kinds of second hand products, from furniture to clothes and footwear, to raise money which is used to directly help people involved in the cancer process.
The funds raised from the sale of the merchandise on display in the shop, which comes from private donations, are used directly for car transfers, accompaniment, translation services and even a private residence for people, of any nationality, who need special care due to the disease.
“Anything that adds up to helping others in San Javier is welcome,” said the mayor, José Miguel Luengo, about the initiative which has been running in the municipality since 2008 and currently has 106 volunteers, most of them English. “I wish them all the best of luck in this new phase and as mayor I thank them for their work in helping others,” he added.
