The municipality of San Javier is taking a further step in its promotion of recycling with a campaign to collect used oil, which has already borne fruit and which is now gaining momentum with the placement of 30 new orange 120-litre containers in the surroundings of public buildings and a specific vehicle for their regular collection. The Mayor, José Miguel Luengo, and the Councillor for Public Services, María Dolores Ruiz, presented the vehicle today at the municipal ecopark in San Javier, with a practical demonstration of how to recycle used oil at home using the special funnels available at the Town Hall and other municipal buildings.
José Miguel Luengo pointed out the importance of recycling used oil and not throwing it down the sink «because of the negative consequences it has for the sewage system, its polluting and pest-generating power». On the other hand, domestic oil can be given a second life, as soap or biodiesel, as almost a litre of oil can be used to produce almost a litre of biofuel, said Luengo. The municipal campaign, which began last summer with various actions on beaches and weekly markets, invites citizens to pour used cooking oil, once cold, into plastic bottles with the help of the funnel and deposit them in the orange containers.
The vehicle that has been purchased for this campaign will periodically collect the containers so that the authorised manager can take it to the recycling plant where it is treated for the production of non-food products, such as biodiesel. The orange bins can be found in all ecoparks, senior centres and civic centres throughout the municipality, and other public buildings such as libraries, the Conservatory, the Faculty of Sports Science, sports centres, the municipal warehouse and the Tourism offices.

The campaign, which is an extension of the service of separate collection of household oil that has launched the City Council of San Javier, is part of the Plans to Promote the Environment (PIMA), convened by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, through the Autonomous Communities, for which the City Council of San Javier received a grant of 39,116.98 € for its implementation.
