The Community of Murcia will implement a sustainable rainwater management system in the Air City of San Javier.

The project will involve an investment of more than 2 million euros and will allow the water coming down from Avenida El Mirador to be collected through underground channels.

The Regional Minister for Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Antonio Luengo, presented today in San Javier, together with the Mayor, José Miguel Luengo, the implementation of a sustainable rainwater management system that the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia will build in the Air City. The project, which will involve an investment of 2,001,085.13€ and will take 12 months to complete, is designed to channel the rainwater which runs down Avenida de El Mirador towards the Air City.

The works consist of the excavation of a system of underground channels that will allow up to 3,600 cubic metres of water to accumulate in the tanks generated between the channels, which will then be sent back to the treatment plant to follow the usual water treatment cycle. On the 6,500-metre site between Ronda Norte and España avenues, a garden and recreational area will be created for the citizens with vegetation, a children’s play area, a kiddies’ playground, a zip wire area, benches and low-energy lighting.

The project will be carried out on the 6,500m2 plot of land bordering the Avenue of Spain, creating a large surface leisure park.

The Mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo thanked the Regional Ministry for this new infrastructure that defends the municipality and the Mar Menor against torrential rains and recalled that «this is a commitment of the regional government that contributes to the viability of the expected project of urbanization of the Air City to make it compatible with the new regulations of the Mar Menor».

«This is a good time to urge the Ministry of Defence to fulfil its commitment to the development of the Air City,» said José Miguel Luengo, who recalled that the municipal licence has been in place for four years and that «the works should already be underway according to the announcements made by the Ministry itself».

Councillor Antonio Luengo pointed out that this new infrastructure responds to «the regional government’s commitment to water management» and is part of a regional programme for rainwater management with a total budget of 8 million euros, which also includes new infrastructure in Abarán, Pliego, Lorquí, Cartagena and Alcantarilla.
