Sierro hosts this month the Andalusian and national championships of mountain races at school age
It is the Spanish festival of vertical and mountain sports with the participation of children between 11 and 15 years old.

The Provincial Council and the Town Council of Sierro are collaborating with the Andalusian Federation of Mountain Sports, Climbing and Hiking in the organisation of this double event for athletics at school age, which will bring together the best athletes in Andalusia for the Andalusian Mountain Running Championships -13 and 14 May- and those selected for the Spanish School Age and Children’s and Cadet National Team Championships -26, 27 and 28 May-.

The Sports Councillor, José Antonio García, emphasised the great merit of the municipality of Sierro for organising two top-level athletics championships in just three weeks: “The fact that a town with less than 400 inhabitants hosts two official and federated tournaments of this kind is not only a proposal to promote grassroots sport, but also to work to revitalise inland villages as part of the Council’s basic objective of fighting against depopulation”.

García pointed out that the local authority’s main challenge is to democratise access to popular sport, in line with the spirit of the Provincial Sports Games, but it is also “committed to federated and competitive sport. We understand that it is important to instil the values of sport in this double aspect”, he said.

The Mayor, Adrián de Manuel, has highlighted the efforts of the more than 100 volunteers who will help to make the stay of children and parents in the village more pleasant and has recalled the impact on the local economy that competitions of this nature have: “All the hotels are full for both weekends and there are even families from national delegations who have had to stay in houses and farmhouses in the village so that they can enjoy our environment with the maximum comfort”.

The delegate of the Mountaineering Federation, Emilio Martínez, recognised that Sierro has a special geography for hosting this type of event and expressed his satisfaction with the social involvement: “This municipality was chosen for a simple reason: because it has an incomparable natural setting, of special beauty, and because of the commitment of the whole town”.

Andalusian Championship

The first big event in the mountains of Sierro will take place this Saturday and Sunday, 13 and 14 May. It is the Andalusian Championship of Mountain Running in School Age, which groups together the categories alevin (10 or 11 years old), infantile (12 or 13 years old) and cadet (14 or 15 years old), in both the male and female categories.

Around 250 children from all the Andalusian federations will take part in this weekend’s event, which will have individual and provincial classifications. Each delegation will send 27 representatives: 24 athletes (four per category and gender), two delegates (male and female) and an expedition leader.

On Saturday afternoon, the cadet, infantile and juvenile vertical events will be held, with starts every 30 seconds, which will finish at around 20:00 hours. The Sierro Town Council has prepared a big dinner for the children and teenagers and a musical concert has been organised to liven up the evening (22:00).

On Sunday, from 09:00 hours, it will be the turn of the CXM races (cadet, child and juvenile). At 12:00 there will be a parade with the festive charanga from Sierro. The young athletes will enjoy a popular meal before closing their stay in this village of Filabreño.

Spanish Championship

The races in this weekend’s regional competition will count towards representing the Andalusian national team in the next Spanish School and Children’s and Cadet Age Group Championships, which will also be held in Sierro from 26th to 28th May. Some 250 children from all the autonomous communities, plus the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, are expected to take part in the national competition.
