The Water Board calls for the Lower Almazora desalination plant works to be declared an emergency projectThe Water Board of Almeria has held a meeting to analyse the water situation in the province and also the measures included in the drought decree recently approved by the Government of the Andalusian Regional Government, as well as other issues related to the works to be carried out by the central and regional administrations, with the aim of monitoring the work schedules so that they are implemented and not delayed in time. Likewise, regarding the works being carried out on the Bajo Almanzora desalination plant, which has been unusable since 2012, it will ask the central government to declare these works “emergency” in order to be able to shorten the completion deadlines, given that the plant is not scheduled to be fully operational before 2026.

The Mesa del Agua de Almería has warned that the province is experiencing, in general terms, a “worrying” situation that could be “very serious” in the Almanzora region. In this area there are some irrigation communities “that are holding their own, but others are seeing whether or not they can continue with their production. There are twenty irrigation communities in the region and the situation could be serious or very serious,” said the Mesa’s spokesman, José Antonio Fernández.

The convenience of “monitoring the state of the works” being carried out by the central and regional administrations has also been pointed out. The province’s requests have been taken up, but these “should not be delayed over time and that is why we believe that the most appropriate thing to do is to hold these regular meetings to ensure that the timetables for the work to be carried out are met”.

The meeting of the Almeria Water Board was held at the headquarters of Asempal, where its president, José Cano, wanted to highlight the work carried out by this forum which “continues to look after the interests of such an important sector in our province as irrigators and farmers” who make the existence of the so-called ‘Almeria model’ possible.
