Warning about robbery of elderly people using the “cuddly hug” method

Warning about robbery of elderly people using the cuddly hug method
The last case detected was in Mojácar.

Over the last month, the Guardia Civil has detected several cases of theft from elderly people by the method of the affectionate embrace in different tourist areas of the Almeria coast. This technique consists of approaching people, generally of advanced age, with the excuse of making a consultation, some kind of offer or even making a greeting simulating confusion and, after entering into conversation with them, taking advantage of the moment of saying goodbye to establish physical contact and steal some valuable object from them.

The most recent case occurred last Wednesday morning in the town of Mojácar. The victim, a 71 year old man, reported that a 25 year old woman had stolen a Rolex watch valued at 14,300 euros while he was walking near the beach.

The alleged perpetrator approached him to ask him affectionately for directions and began stroking his arm, to which the victim reacted by pulling away. Shortly afterwards she noticed that her watch was missing and could see the woman driving off in a small dark-coloured car.

The victim did not file a complaint until a day after the incident, making it difficult for the officers to identify and arrest the perpetrator of the robbery. However, the Guardia Civil officers continue with the investigation to clarify the facts, identify the perpetrator and recover the stolen objects.

In order to prevent similar cases from occurring, the Guardia Civil advises caution and not to let strangers approach within a very short distance. In the event of having been victims of this crime, it is necessary to notify the Guardia Civil immediately, by calling 062, and provide all the information and details that you can remember about the person who committed the robbery, their means of escape and check their belongings.
