Emergency medical services were unable to save the life of a 17-year-old boy who died of immersion syndrome while bathing at Los Taray-Matalentisco beach, in the municipality of Águilas.
Several calls to the Emergency Coordination Centre ‘1-1-2’, at around 17.00 hours, reported a person having difficulty getting out of the water on the beach of Los Taray-Matalentisco. Another person had entered to help her, but the strong waves were making it difficult to reach her.
Immediately lifeguards from the Águilas Civil Protection Plan Copla by land, and by sea with a boat, went to the point where the bathers were, at the same time as a patrol of the Águilas Local Police and a Mobile Emergency Unit from the 061 Emergency and Health Emergency Department.
A helicopter from the Directorate General for Public Safety and Emergencies was also dispatched, with the Air Rescue Group of Specialists from the Consortium for Fire Fighting and Rescue of the Region of Murcia.
The rescuers report that they have located the unconscious young man who was having difficulty getting out of the water. They proceeded to rescue him and transfer him to the beach, and began CPR manoeuvres. The other swimmer who had come to his aid was able to get out of the water.
Medical staff from the 061 Emergency Mobile Unit continued with the resuscitation work without success, and reported the death of the 17-year-old. The intervention of aerial means with the rescue team was not necessary.
