San Javier will try to reaffirm the Green Flag obtained last summer in Ecovidrio’s summer campaign.

Six municipalities and more than 650 catering establishments in the Region of Murcia will compete this summer in the #GreenFlagsMovimientoBanderasVerdes glass collection campaign.

The mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo and the area manager of Ecovidrio, Roberto Fuentes, presented this morning on the beach Barnuevo, Santiago de la Riberam a new edition of the Green Flag Movement which aims to promote and reward the recycling of glass containers in the hospitality sector during the summer, when 35 percent of the annual total is generated. The municipality of San Javier, which has won in the last two editions in the Region of Murcia, may revalidate its Green Flag, although Ecovidrio will also reward one of the other five municipalities in Murcia participating in the campaign, explained Roberto Fuentes.

The Green Flag Movement, which is celebrating its fourth edition, will take place in the six coastal municipalities of the Region of Murcia: San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar, Los Alcázares, Cartagena, Águilas and Mazarrón, with a total of 650 catering establishments. Roberto Fuentes explained that the campaign aims to solve the collection of the significant increase in packaging generated by the hospitality industry during the summer and on the other hand reward the hoteliers and municipalities most committed to sustainability through glass recycling. To this end, points are awarded for the increase in packaging compared to last summer, the number of participating establishments and the involvement of the local councils in publicising the campaign and raising awareness.

Mayor José Miguel Luengo expressed the commitment of the San Javier Town Council to recycling and the environment “as demonstrated by our participation in this type of Ecovidrio campaign”. He also thanked the hoteliers for their participation “who help us to achieve these awards, which act as a stimulus to continue in this direction”. Luengo recalled the creation of the environmental awareness department “which will raise awareness among young and old about the need to take care of the environment”.

The Green Flags movement in 2022 made it possible to collect more than 2,238 tonnes of glass containers, the subsequent recycling of which has prevented the emission of 1,300 tonnes of CO2 , equivalent to more than 19,000 car journeys between Murcia and Madrid, or to save some 1,600 Mwh of energy. During this year’s campaign, Ecovidrio will launch the second edition of the Barometer on the sustainability of our coasts and will reward the hotelier most committed to the sustainability of the Murcian coast.
