The Castillos del Mar square in La Manga is revitalised with green spaces, healthy games and rest areas.

The Regional Minister for Development and Infrastructures, José Ramón Díez de Revenga, together with the Mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, during his visit to the works of the Plaza Castillos del Mar framed in the EDUSI strategy ‘La Manga 365’.

The Community promotes the enjoyment of the Castillos del Mar square in La Manga del Mar Menor with the remodelling of spaces that will revitalise the area and make it more accessible to the public. To this end, it will have new green areas, children’s and healthy games and large areas for walking and resting.

The works, which are nearing completion, are part of the ‘Plazas al Mar in San Javier’ project with an investment of 1,964,037 euros and within the framework of the European Strategy for Sustainable and Integrated Development (EDUSI) ‘La Manga 365’, 80 percent of which is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and 20 percent by Community funds.

The acting Minister for Development and Infrastructures, José Ramón Díez de Revenga, visited the remodelling works this week together with the Mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, and stressed that, in these actions, “pedestrianisation and the enjoyment of the most popular enclaves of La Manga predominate, at the same time as integrating the natural environment into the urban scene”.

He explained that it is a square open to the sea, with new green areas designed with native plant species and with large areas for cross-training sports and children’s games with an aeronautical theme. Sustainable urban drainage techniques (SUDS) have been used in the design in order to use rainwater to irrigate the green areas.

The project covers a surface area of 5,255 square metres and is completed with new paving and street furniture, renovation of the lighting with LED technology, areas of natural shade and pergolas, 12 bicycle racks and two charging points for electric vehicles.

The remodelled Castillos del Mar square, whose investment exceeds one million euros, will be linked by a wooden pedestrian walkway to the new Zoco square, which will be created as a space open to the public.
The works of the so-called ‘Plazas al Mar’ are being carried out by the San Javier City Council and financed by the Regional Ministry of Development and Infrastructures following the signing of a collaboration agreement.
