The Guardia Civil in Almeria increases security during the summer

Within the framework of the “Safe Tourism” Plan, the presence of the Guardia Civil is being increased in tourist areas.

The Civil Guard, within the framework of the “Safe Tourism Plan”, is increasing its presence, with uniformed and plainclothes officers, in coastal and leisure areas with a high concentration of tourists in the province of Almeria, with the aim of increasing security for the summer season.

The Plan, launched by the Secretary of State for Security and in order to achieve effective management of the resources available in the fight against crime in tourist areas, aims to provide visitors with a safer environment during their trip and stay in the province during the current holiday period.

These actions also include the intensification of public information activities to prevent, among other things, online scams related to the booking of accommodation and tourist packages with their different possibilities and services.

These types of scams are not only common at this time of the year, but due to high demand, they can increase, as in several recently reported cases. The scammers tricked their victims when they tried to formalise a holiday rental using social networks, mobile apps for buying and selling between individuals and other online platforms. Payments were made by bank transfer or via Bizum and ranged from €300 to €2,500.

Without forgetting other areas, the Guardia Civil will increase its activity in the areas of greatest tourist affluence such as the east and west of Almeria, also covering inland areas such as the Alpujarra de Almeria, increasing surveillance on roads, hotels, campsites and beaches.

With regard to shows and events involving large concentrations of people, such as the Dreambeach electronic music festival being held in Villaricos, the Guardia Civil will also reinforce security measures with the intention of guaranteeing the normal development of these leisure activities, in which measures will also be applied to prevent and avoid small-scale drug trafficking.

In specific places, and where there is traditionally a greater tourist influx, such as Garrucha, Mojácar, San José, Carboneras, Cabo de Gata, Almerimar, Adra and, especially in urbanisations, such as Roquetas de Mar or Aguadulce, the Guardia Civil will increase its activity with occasional support from the Citizen Security Unit (USECIC) of the Almeria Command and the Reserve and Security Groups (GRS) and the Rapid Action Group (GAR), with the clear intention of guaranteeing maximum security for residents and tourists.

Likewise, on the occasion of Operation Crossing the Strait of Gibraltar, the resources of the Corps have also been strengthened to guarantee the flow of people through the Port of Almeria.

In this sense, the increased presence of the Guardia Civil in these areas will allow working in two ways: one direct, with the close treatment of residents and visitors that will facilitate the early detection of criminal acts committed, and another indirect, with the aim of increasing the objective security, as well as the subjective perception of security for the summer season.

For years, the “Safe Tourism Plan” has included the possibility for residents and visitors to report certain types of crime via the Internet on the aurl https://www.guardiacivil.es/es/servicios/atencionciudadano_1/planturismoseguro/index.html, which also includes all the information on the plan, as well as information leaflets in Spanish, French, English, Italian, German, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Arabic offering simple and practical safety tips.

All these measures are aimed at ensuring that the Guardia Civil can guarantee that both foreigners and residents of Almeria can enjoy their holidays at a time when the influx of visitors to the province is more than significant.
