San Javier opens its first library in a green area

A recycled wooden bookcase now serves as a bookcrossing point in a new green area recently recovered by Parks and Gardens.

Rehabilitating degraded areas and converting them into green areas that improve the urban landscape, promoting the use of outdoor green spaces among young people and linking all this to culture, is the new objective of the Department of Parks and Gardens of the City Council of San Javier, for which it has had the collaboration of other departments such as Youth, Culture, Environmental Awareness and Public Services.

The Mayor, José Miguel Luengo and the Councillor for Parks and Gardens, María Dolores Ruiz today visited the latest green area to be recovered, a 3000 square metre area surrounding the Barrio de Los Ríos, along Calle Río Benamor, in San Javier. The area now has the first “bookcrossing” point, which is intended to be replicated in other green areas of the municipality.

María Dolores Ruiz explained that it is a bookcrossing, which has been made by the person in charge of the San Javier Ecopark, with recycled material. The library of San Javier is in charge of providing the bookcase with books for all ages and tastes, which the public will be free to take and return or exchange for another once read. A wooden picnic table has been installed next to the bookshelf for the convenience of users.

During the visit, which was also attended by the councillors for Environmental Awareness, María José Bernal and Youth, Isabel Madrid, they were able to congratulate the Aidemar brigade who have been in charge of the improvement project and the maintenance of this new green area. María Dolores Ruiz explained that the transformation works have been developed through the maintenance contract of parks and gardens, within the lot that the brigade of the Special Employment Centre of Aidemar is in charge of. Ruiz added that “it has been a laborious job because it was a very stony area, but finally we have managed to improve the landscape by planting grass and cleaning up the existing trees, for the greater enjoyment of the neighbours”.

The job trainer of the Special Employment Centre, Alejandro López, has directed the improvement project in the area for which he has counted with the brigade of San Javier, the Special Employment Centre and the maintenance brigades of green areas and lawns, which will be responsible for continuing to maintain in perfect condition this and other parks in the municipality.
