The intervention of an illegal poultry slaughterhouse could be carried out thanks to the work of the Local Police of Zurgena, who initiated an investigation on 27 April, when they suspected the activities that were being carried out in a farm located in the neighbourhood of Los Palacés, in the municipality of Zurgena. A person is being investigated as the person in charge of a poultry farm which lacked the health and administrative authorisation to carry out the activity of a poultry slaughterhouse, and he is being charged with an alleged offence against public health and workers’ rights.
The investigation carried out by the Municipal Police allowed information to be gathered on the alleged illegal acts, which culminated in an action on the site on 3 May, where the Zurgena Local Police unit intervened, together with the Civil Guard (SEPRONA and Information Unit), inspecting the poultry farms, concluding the intervention, The inspection concluded with the lifting of numerous reports for infractions due to the unhealthiness of the farm and the existence of a poultry slaughterhouse without health and administrative authorisation, as well as a person under investigation as the person responsible for the poultry farm for an offence against Public Health and another against Workers’ Rights, as people were found working on the premises in an irregular situation.
Once this inspection was concluded, and in view of its result, the support of the medical staff of the Northern Sanitary Management Area and the Regional Agricultural Office of Huércal Overa was requested for the development of a new inspection.
As a result of this second inspection carried out the following day, the unhealthy state of the farm and the existence of a poultry slaughterhouse without health and administrative authorisation was corroborated, indications of the sale of chickens were collected, 13 slaughtered and dressed chickens were sealed, which according to their hygienic state could pose a health risk to people and another 200 chickens (broilers) were seized, which although apparently in good condition, did not show any authorised movement of entry into the farm.
As a result of these actions, the person in charge of the poultry farm was investigated for an offence against Public Health and another against Workers’ Rights, and 13 slaughtered and dressed chickens and a mobile phone were seized, and 160 chickens were slaughtered due to sanitary emptying.
The proceedings are placed at the disposal of the Court of First Instance and Instruction No. 1 of Huércal Overa.
