The Los Arcos del Mar Menor general university hospital has renovated the surgical equipment in its 12 operating theatres and improved the Obstetrics and Gynaecology area, specifically the dilatation and delivery rooms and the obstetric operating theatre.
The acting Regional Minister for Health, Juan José Pedreño, who was accompanied by the councillors of San Javier, María del Mar Pérez and Alba Sánchez, today visited the hospital centre located in San Javier, where he stressed that the new equipment put into operation «has involved an investment of more than one million euros of the European funds received».
In this regard, Pedreño reported that over the last few years the equipment in the hospital’s 12 operating theatres has been renewed, «which has had a very positive impact on the increase in surgical activity, almost ten percent in the last three years».

«We have gone from performing 7,500 operations per year in 2019 to more than 8,200 during 2022,» he stressed.
The renovation of these integrated operating theatres, worth more than 7000,000 euros, has included the integration and digital multimedia control of all the operating theatres, as well as equipping them with new fluorescence laparoscopy equipment and renewing the motor systems of several specialties.
The arthroscopy systems have also been upgraded and the document management systems have been renewed, with the integration of the Patient Medical Record.
More than a thousand deliveries a year
The obstetric area at Los Arcos del Mar Menor has seven labour and delivery rooms and an obstetric operating theatre in which more than 300,000 euros have been invested.

The dilation beds have been replaced with more up-to-date ones, the lighting in all the rooms has been improved and the unit’s computer equipment has been renewed to allow the integration of the Patient’s Clinical History, as in the operating theatres.
This reference hospital for the municipalities of Los Alcázares, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar and Torre Pacheco attended more than a thousand births last year.
Increase in staff
Los Arcos hospital serves an estimated population of 150,000 people, as it is an important tourist area, not just a seasonal one. It has 330 beds and a staff which, over the last three years, including summer reinforcement, has increased by almost 40 percent, giving the centre more than 1,500 professionals at present.
