Work begins on the development of Ciudad del Aire

A coordination meeting was held at the Town Hall to coordinate the works, which have a completion period of two years and which will end with the reception by the Town Hall of the current military colony.

The urban development works of the Ciudad del Aire, which are being carried out by the Ministry of Defence, have begun today and according to the deadline will be completed within two years, when the 400,000 square metres of the military colony will be integrated into the urban fabric of the municipality of San Javier. Coinciding with the start of the works, a coordination meeting was held this morning in the Town Hall chaired by the Mayor, José Miguel Luengo, with representatives of the Housing Institute, the Ministry of Defence, the Directorate General for Water, the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, the company awarded the contract, the site management and municipal technicians. José Miguel Luengo has regretted the delay in the start of the works by the Ministry, which had a municipal licence since 2018, although he has pointed out that it is nevertheless “good news” and has expressed “the commitment of the City Council to facilitate everything possible in order for these works to be a success and for the Ciudad del Aire to be a driving force for the area”.

The Mayor of San Javier pointed out that “we have two years of coordination ahead of us with the site management so that the development is in the best possible condition when it is accepted by the Town Hall, and that the residents finally have the services they are entitled to and have been waiting for for years”. Luengo added that the urbanisation of the Ciudad del Aire is not only going to benefit the residents but also the whole municipality “which will see an area that has been degraded over time flourish again”. The urban reorganisation will leave new parks and public green areas, and new services will be provided for the whole area, including the new sewage system, which is of vital importance due to its proximity to the Mar Menor. The mayor also recalled that the Autonomous Community will build a large storm tank with a surface park, in a work coordinated with the Ministry of Defence, to defend the Ciudad del Aire from the effects of torrential rains.
