The libraries and town councils of San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar and Los Alcázares, in collaboration with the Mental Health and Culture Commission of the Mar Menor region and entities such as the Citizen Laboratory of San Javier, are promoting a joint initiative to promote mental health among the population through culture. The auditorium of the Youth Council of San Javier hosted yesterday the presentation of the initiative which was attended by representatives of the three councils and Juan Jimenez Roset, coordinator of the Mental Health Unit Mar Menor, Los Arcos Hospital, from where the initiative to bring mental health to the community with the help of libraries arose.
Art and culture as therapeutic elements were present at the event with the participation of the group ExpresArte, from Molina de Segura, made up of people with mental illnesses, who presented poems set to music to students from secondary schools and different associations.
The programme will be developed throughout the year and includes as a great novelty the ‘cultural prescription’ that will be issued by the family doctor recommending a book that can be withdrawn from the libraries as if it were a medicine.
