Individual arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting Ukrainian asylum seeker children in Cartagena

He was arrested in the province of Lerida, where he fled with the intention of leaving the country via the Pyrenean border.

The Guardia Civil has arrested an individual in the town of La Seu d’Urgell, Lleida, who is allegedly accused of sexually assaulting four Ukrainian children who were living in Cartagena with families of compatriots displaced by the war in Ukraine. Apparently, according to the Benemérita, he gained the trust of the mothers to stay alone with the children in the port city.

Operation ‘Opikum’ began at the end of September, when a Ukrainian woman reported to an association dedicated to supporting displaced persons and refugees that a fellow countryman living in the same building might be sexually assaulting her children, who were minors.

Assisted by social workers from this association, the mother went to the Civil Guard headquarters in Cartagena to report what her children had told her.

The complainant explained to the investigators that the suspect had gained her trust and that of the children, with whom he used to play, by taking advantage of the moments when he was alone with them to touch them in intimate areas.

Once the mother knew what was going on, she spoke to other compatriots, mothers of children who were also in contact with this individual, and it did not take long to receive two more complaints that pointed to the suspect as the alleged perpetrator of several sexual assaults.

The agents found out that the detainee had certain links in the Lleida municipality of La Seu d’Urgell, a place to which he had fled with the intention of leaving the national territory.

The Guardia Civil located and arrested this man in La Seu d’Urgell as the alleged perpetrator of four crimes of sexual aggression against minors. At the time of his arrest, four mobile phones and a pair of sunglasses with an integrated hidden camera were seized, which are being analysed.

The detainee, the effects seized and the proceedings were placed at the disposal of the Court of Instruction of La Seu d’Urgell (Lérida), and he was ordered to be remanded in custody.

Operation Opikum remains open until the seized technological storage devices are analysed to determine whether they contain files related to the investigation.
