The Provincial Council of Almeria has presented a new edition of the Subida del Mármol, (‘Marble Race’), a motor racing event held in the Almeria municipality of Macael. This year it is the 47th edition and will take place this weekend.
The Vice-President and Provincial Councillor for Sport, José Antonio García, the Mayor of Macael, Raúl Martínez, the President of the Andalusian Automobile Federation, Manuel Alonso, and the President of the Escudería del Mármol, Ana Belén Tapia, took part in the ceremony to celebrate the event, in which around 120 drivers will take part and which is expected to attract almost 25,000 live spectators per edition.
The vice-president pointed out that this is one of the most prestigious events on the Andalusian mountain calendar and its importance; “it is the most popular sporting event in Almeria because the number of spectators at this climb through the quarries of Macael is more than 25,000, which is spectacular”.
“This event is included in the Provincial Motor Racing Championship. It is worth highlighting the Provincial Council’s commitment, together with the various local councils, to make the province a benchmark for motor racing. There are 15 races in total,” said García.
For his part, the Mayor of Macael said that “it is a great opportunity to enjoy a great weekend. Macael becomes the motor racing capital of Almeria this weekend. From 4 p.m. this Friday we will be able to enjoy a great weekend. There are 126 drivers registered for this wonderful event”.
The president of the Andalusian Automobile Federation said that the Subida al Mármol is classified as “one of the best races in Andalusia, and even in Spain”. Finally, the president of the Escudería del Mármol also emphasised that this event will serve as a showcase for the municipality and the region and that “business will be completed this weekend”.
The Subida del Mármol in Macael, which will take place on 27, 28 and 29 October, is the most prestigious motor racing event on the Andalusian mountain calendar and is possibly one of the three best events on the national calendar, for which it is a qualifying event.
In addition, the fact that this event is attended by the best drivers on the national mountain racing grid makes this event a must for sportsmen and women and fans of this type of motor racing. It has also obtained, on several occasions, the prize awarded by the Andalusian Motoring Federation for the best event in the Andalusian mountain racing calendar.
This year marks the 47th edition since its inception, with the participation of both genders and more than 120 participants competing in the categories of Touring Cars, Single Seaters and Car Cross; making it a sporting activity with a pronounced tourist character, as during its celebration the number of occupations and hotel services in the whole region is significantly increased.
