The president of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS), Mario Urrea, accompanied by the technical director, Carlos Marco, and the water commissioner, Francisco Javier García, held a meeting with the town planning councillor of Cartagena City Council, Diego Ortega, and the mayor of Los Alcázares, Mario Pérez Cervera.

The meeting was held after the meeting with the residents of Bahía Bella to explore the actions to be taken by the councils and the basin organisation to try to resolve the sewerage problem in the area around the Bahía Bella housing development, “obviously each administration acting within the scope of their respective competences”, according to the press release issued by the CHS.

Mario Urrea and Francisco Javier García explained that the Water Commission would authorise, if necessary, the works that could be proposed to locate the sewerage pipes. Likewise, the Mayor of Los Alcázares expressed his willingness to treat the effluent at the Los Alcázares WWTP, where it would arrive via municipal pipes. After learning of the possible alternatives, the representative of the Cartagena City Council undertook to study with its legal services the possible ways to be able to undertake, if necessary, the execution of these sewerage works.

The CHS stressed the need to undertake the works that would make it possible to stop the discharges and, in this way, contribute to the recovery of the Mar Menor, avoiding the actions that would otherwise be required by current water legislation. Finally, at the meeting, the three administrations noted the need to find a solution to the execution of the works proposed by the residents, in accordance with the legislation in force, which is applicable to them in both the hydraulic and urban planning spheres. The basin organisation will inform the residents of all this at a forthcoming meeting, which was the commitment made after the meeting at the end of October.
