Almeria Provincial Council raises awareness of disability with workshops in Oria, Macael and Lúcar

Raising awareness of diversity’ is the title of the activity that has been carried out in schools in the province.

The Provincial Council of Almeria has carried out an activity in different schools in the province with the aim of raising awareness of diversity and promoting awareness of people with disabilities and encouraging their social inclusion. Raising awareness of diversity’ is the title of the workshop that has been given in 12 schools in the municipalities of Uleila del Campo, Abla, Berja, La Mojonera, María, Oria, Cuevas del Almanzora, Garrucha, Alhama de Almería, Viator, Lúcar and Macael.

Coinciding with the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December, the Diputación, from the Department of Social Welfare, has undertaken this initiative to make children aware of the importance and tolerance of diversity and to understand the reality that people with disabilities experience on a daily basis. This type of action is part of the VI Community Social Services Plan of the Provincial Council, in the line dedicated to prevention and treatment.

The Vice-President of the Provincial Council and Deputy for Social Welfare, Ángel Escobar, has visited some of these workshops in order to see the activity in situ and share with the children what the experience of attending this workshop has meant for them. The vice-president stated that “this type of proposal is very necessary because it helps many children to empathise and understand what disability is and the importance of inclusion and equality”.

In this regard, Escobar recalled that “in addition to these workshops on diversity, the Provincial Family Council that we recently held was dedicated to People with Disabilities and the associations in the province that work in this area to improve the quality of life of all Almeria residents”.

The workshops have been given in 12 Primary Education centres in which an awareness-raising activity has been carried out with a theme focused on the knowledge and inclusion of people with disabilities that allows children to put themselves in their place, empathise with them and perceive the obstacles they face on a daily basis depending on the type of disability, from a playful methodology, which also allows the development of their imagination and socialisation.
