Cartagena City Council will be putting out to tender over the next few months a series of projects aimed at improving mobility in the municipality. Thus, in order to expand and improve the network of municipal bike lanes, the City Council of Cartagena has put out to tender the works of two new roads, one in Grecia Street, with access to the IES Politécnico, and the other in the Plaza Puertas de San José, to connect the Cuesta del Batel with Capitanes Ripoll, in addition to the recovery of the old bike lane of Juan Fernández Street, and adding to this the installation of intelligent bus shelters, the Consistory indicates on its website.

The Calle Grecia cycle lane is a project which aims to provide a solution to the need to extend the municipal network towards the Barrio de San Ginés and the Barriada Virgen de la Caridad, offering an entry point for users of the IES Politécnico.

The tender budget is 406,050 euros and the expected completion period is 3 months.

Cartagena City Council has put out to tender the construction of two new roads, one in Grecia street, with access to the IES Politécnico, and the other in the Plaza Puertas de San José, in order to connect the Cuesta del Batel with Capitanes Ripoll.

The aim is for this new point in the network of municipal cycle lanes to become a pole of attraction for cycling mobility and the promotion of Sustainable Development.

For its part, the planned cycle lane in the Puertas de San José square will provide an interconnection between two of the main cycle lanes in the city, the Cuesta del Batel and Capitanes Ripoll, solving the problems that the interruption of these lanes is causing in the area for cyclists, who either ride on the pavement or go directly down to the road in a place with very heavy traffic, with the risk that this entails.

The works have a budget of 142,477 euros and a completion period of 4 months.

In both cases, the deadline for submitting bids will remain open until 10 January.

In this line, the recovery of the old bicycle lane on Calle Juan Fernández is also planned, which was removed during the refurbishment works on the street as it showed obvious safety failures in terms of signage, perception and use of the lane.

The project, which is still at the tender approval and publication stage, aims to establish a cycle lane at one of the main entrances to the city centre for cyclists who currently ride, with the consequent risk, on the pavement or in the wrong direction on the road. The planned budget is 237,274 euros, with a completion period of 4 months.

It is also planned to install intelligent bus shelters to progressively adapt the municipal public transport bus stops.
