Ivo Petrov, the young man whose disappearance in the Mar Menor kept the community in suspense for 20 days, was finally buried last Thursday in the cemetery of Los Alcazares, his home town. The Town Hall, under the direction of Mario Cervera, provided financial support to the family to cover the funeral expenses.
The sad funeral ceremony took place at the Virgen del Pasico mortuary in Torre Pacheco, where friends and family gathered to say their last goodbye to the young man. Miglena, the teenager’s mother, visibly affected, held the photo of her deceased son against her chest, while other relatives, dressed in mourning clothes, surrounded her in a gesture of support. Although hope clung to her until the last moment, reality had set in days earlier with the discovery of Ivo’s body.
Miglena, the teenager’s mother, leaves the mortuary clutching her late son’s photo to her chest.
The funeral procession included a wreath of carnations and daisies on the car carrying the young Petrov. The family, of Bulgarian origin, decided that Ivo would be laid to rest eternally in the coastal village he considered his home. The ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Los Alcázares, Mario Cervera, as well as several members of his local government team and the lawyers assisting the deceased’s family, Sergio Marco and Verónica Ene.

It is important to remember that the Court of Instruction number 2 of San Javier authorised the transfer of the body and its burial in the cemetery of Los Alcázares. Although the preliminary autopsy reports and the ocular inspection showed no evident signs of violence on Ivo’s body, the exact causes of his death cannot be determined until the forensic report is completed, a process that could take weeks or even months due to tests such as the analysis of toxins, which must be carried out outside the Region of Murcia.
While the family mourns the loss of their loved one, the investigation continues. The Guardia Civil continues with the investigations, and Francisco Javier, one of the young survivors of the shipwreck, is summoned to testify in March as an investigator for his alleged involvement in the theft of the kayak in which they went sailing. The other survivor, José David, is not yet of legal age and will be heard at the offices of the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Minors.
The tragedy was triggered in the early hours of 5 January, when Ivo’s friends, José David and Francisco Javier, alerted to the disappearance of the young Petrov in the Mar Menor after the boat in which they were sailing was wrecked. Although the two survivors were rescued and taken to hospital with signs of hypothermia, contradictions in their account raised questions from the outset. The investigation is still ongoing to clarify the facts and shed light on the circumstances surrounding Ivo Petrov’s tragic disappearance.
