The ‘Furor’ departs Cartagena: four and a half months at sea to fight piracy off the coast of Africa

The 74 seafarers of the BAM will monitor and secure national interests in the waters of the Gulf of Guinea.

The maritime action vessel ‘Furor’ set sail this Thursday from its base at the Cartagena Arsenal to begin a four and a half month deployment to the west coast of Africa and the Gulf of Guinea to fight piracy. During this period, the ship will remain integrated into the operational structure of the Armed Forces, with 74 people on board, visiting ports in Ivory Coast, Gabon, Nigeria, Ghana, Angola, Cameroon, Senegal, and Mauritania.

«Stability in West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea is fundamental for Spain’s security. Piracy and acts of robbery at sea pose a major risk to the national fishing and maritime community that operates legitimately in the region, where there is also a proliferation of illicit trafficking that poses a threat to Spain,» the navy said.

«The instability in this region, which is a source of important energy resources for Spain, endangers free navigation along maritime lines that are essential for the country,» they concluded.
